Alla Rakha Kalawant

A Sarangi player, Alla Rakha Kalavant, has achieved much fame at a very young age. Alla Rakha joined the Saptak School of Music at Ahmedabad and started receiving training under Smt. Manju Mehta, a well-known Sitar player. Afterwards, he took Sarangi training under Ustad Abdul Latif Khan, A-grade player from Bhopal. In 1995, he won the first prize in the AIR competition. He also won the first prize in Omkaranth Thakur Competition in 1997 and Swarmani in 2000.

He played Sarangi along with many Indian Classical musicians like Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan, Pandit Ajay Chakravarthy, Pandit Swapan Choudhary, Ustad Sabir Khan, Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Ustad Rashid Khan, and many more. He has performed with Ustad Fazal Qureshi in Queen Elizabeth Hall. It was proof of his flawless performance to him. Ustad Mashkoor Khan brought Alla Rakha Kalavant to Kolkata from Jaipur. He got a job as a teacher at Sangeet Research Academy. He has performed at various concerts such as AIR concerts in Pune (1995), Jaipur Sankalp Saptam, Saptak festival in Ahmedabad (1997, 1999, 2000, 2001), and many others. He has played for some great artists, such as Smt. Girija Devi, Pt. Rajan Mishra, and many others.

He believed Sarangi to be the most complete musical instrument because of its ability to adapt to multiple genres. He praised Sarangi so much that he often says that Sarangi does not belong to any Gharana because it is can articulate with the music styles of every Gharana. He has pointed out the scarcity of Sarangi musicians many times, and he compared this scarcity of Sarangi musicians with the death of musicians. His carrer as a music performer has grown over many years.
