He has kept the alive the tradition of the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana (a kind of Indian classical singing). Recently, at the age of 82, he performed in the coke studio season organized by MTV India. His father is Waris Hussain Khan and his grandfather is Inayat Hussain Khan of Sahaswan Gharana. His mother was the daughter of the great Inayat Hussain Khan, and the music was the legacy of his family. His great-great grandfather Ustad Qutubuddin Khan Sa'ab was the court musician of the Nawab of Oudh. Thus, their singing tradition goes back to the times of Tansen and his father was his first guru.

It is believed that the singer tried saying ‘Sa Re Ga Ma’ before he could utter a single word as a kid. His father used to hold him in his chest and used to utter ‘Sa Re Ga Ma’ so that the son could lisp those first words from his tongue. The magic of music was created in the legendary singer. Ghulam Mustafa then learned to sing from Ustad Fida Hussain Khan and the great Nissar Hussain Khan Sa’ab. His family wanted him to grow as a singer, and he had a Tanpura as his mate always.

He has performed before ‘Princess Diana and The Queen’. Even former President of India like Dr. Rajendra Prasad was enthralled by his voice. He is the recipient of Padmashri( 1991), Sangeet Natak Academy Award (2003) and the Padmabhushan (2006). In films, he started his career in Mrinal Sen’s ‘Bhuvan Some’ as a singer. Later he got to sing under Khayyam’s music director for film ‘Umrao Jaan.' Even A.R. Rahman is his disciple. Ghulam Mustafa Khan married Amina Begum, and the couple has four sons who are singers and have sung film songs under A.R. Rahman. He was born on March 3, 1931 in Uttar Pradesh.
