He was born and brought in Mumbai. He is from a cinema background. He is the nephew of the popular advertisements and documentary filmmaker Zafar Hai. His mother worked as an art director in many of Zafar Hai’s movies. He worked as a child actor in his uncle's commercial ad films. He was the “Complan Boy" in a long-running commercial of the '80s, but he soon realized that he likes being behind the camera. He started working as a production assistant while he was still in high school. His father started his own machinery business, and that inspired him to be a producer. He worked as a production assistant on his uncle's famous film The Perfect Murder in 1998, which was produced by Merchant Ivory when he was still in his teens. He has worked as a second assistant director in many films of his uncle. Later, he moved to Los Angeles in 1991 to study filmmaking from Loyola Marymount University. He made several short films for the school there. He directed several commercials, public service advertisements, and music videos. He won the best experimental student film award at The Venice Film Festival for his first student film, 'Disturbance,' in 1993. He made many connections in LA, which led to his journey to Hollywood.
