Hemlata is a famous playback and classical music singer. She was born on August 16, 1954, in Hyderabad. She is one of the legendary singers in Bollywood, who always showed her unique style of singing in every humanistic move. She already made a mark in the industry after delivering excellent voice quality to several Indian serials, films, concerts, albums, etc. She became popular for the songs Le To Aaye Ho Hame Sapno Ke, Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, Kaun Disha Leke Chala Re, and Tu Is Tarah Se Meri Zindagi Mein. She already crooned more than 5000 songs in over 38 languages including Bhojpuri, Bengali, Marwari, Nepali, Persian, Arabic, English, Hindi, Zulu, Dutch, Punjabi, Malayalam, Oriya, Assamese, and much more.

Hemlata earned nominations for Best Female Playback Singer at the Filmfare Awards for five consecutive times through 1977 to 1981. She won one award for the Hindi romantic musical film Chitchor in 1977, due to her outstanding classical rendition of Ravindra Jain’s composition ‘titled Tu Jo Mere Sur Mein. Hemlata spent her childhood in Calcutta and had entered the Bollywood industry since she was 13 years old. Her parents were from Marwari Brahmin Family; her grandfather’s name is Zorawar Bhatt, who was the Maharaja’s spiritual master in the district of Churu in Rajasthan. Later on, she and her family moved to Kolkata for business purpose. Her father’s name is Pandit Jaichand Bhatt, who was a singer, music teacher, performer, and a musician.

Her father is against her decision to enter the field of singing, and because of this she cannot express her passion for music nor showed interest to learn singing. She used to sing in Pooja Pandals secretly, but it was really her fate to become a singer. Even in that suppression against singing, she started singing for the first time through one show, which was organized by her father’s disciple, Gopal Mallick. She picked the song Jago Mohan Pyare, but the orchestra refused to play it since someone is about to sing it too. When the orchestra agreed to her song choice, and she started singing, the entire audience roared and praised her. After finishing the song, she was unable to leave the stage since the audiences are still demanding for her to sing more songs. She sang the same song four times. Hemlata left the stage after finishing 12 songs, and by seeing her talent, Dr. Chandra Roy presented a gold medal to her. Her father finally recognized her talent and decided to take her to Bombay so she can pursue her dreams.

At the age of 12, her father, who became her music Guru, regularly visits her in Bombay to teach music. She used to sing his father’s own compositions when he is performing in Bengali, and her mother used to encourage her as well. She has impressed everyone in many of her stage performances and had won many prizes for her singing with numerous collections of songs and awards.
