Poonam Yadav is an Indian singer born on 1981 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Her family background was poor, and she carried the burden of the family on her shoulders. She started as a phone-booth employee with just Rs.600 per month as salary. She graduated from Sanskrit Pathshala Kanya Inter College. From the beginning, she was good at singing. To pursue a career in singing, she left her home and came to Mumbai and participated in the famous reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge.

As she was poor, Ismail and his wife Ayesha treated Poonam as their own child and supported her financially. They were the pillars of strength to Poonam. Unfortunately, Poonam was not able to win the competition, but she finished 3rd Runner-up. She was stuck further with financial troubles, and she felt it awkward to get help from her mentor all the time. She felt it was her duty to stand on her own legs.
All the problems were circulating her mind, forcing her into sleepless nights. So, she took an overdose of sleeping pills without knowing its severity, waking up two days later at the hospital. But the news that spread out was that she was admitted to the hospital to abort the illegitimate child that was born to her and her mentor Ismail. Hearing this, Poonam was quick to lash out at the journalists causing various controversies. After overcoming all these troubles, she was again seen in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Mega Challenge, that established her as a professional singer. She even got a temporary job in the Railways by the recommendation of Lalu Prasad Yadav.
