Joy Sengupta is a well-known Indian stage and television and film actor, who predominantly works in the Bollywood and Bengali film and theatre industries. He was born on December 14, 1974, in Kolkata and brought up in Delhi and Nepal. He studied at Delhi University and took up English Literature. During this time, he participates in the Delhi-based amateur theatre group, Jana Natya Manch. Subsequently, he earned his diploma in drama at the Living Theatre Academy in Delhi, under the guidance of the prominent theatre director and drama teacher, Ebrahim Alkazi. He was featured in plays like Dance Like a Man and Dinner with Friends. In 2006, Joy won the National Award for Best Actor in Theatre for his performance as Mahatma Gandhi the popular stage play, Sammy, which was directed by Lillette Dubey.

In 1997, he shifted to Mumbai after working in theatre, TV series and telefilms in Delhi. He joined the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), the Alliance Frace and the Maxmuller Bhuvan film societies. He acted in his first telefilm entitled Ragini in year 1994 and presented Zee Entertainment Network’s Super Quiz. Few years after he moved to Mumbai, Joy started acting in television in Siddhant Cinevision’s Waaris on Zee TV in 1999, followed by Sahara One’s Kuch Pal Saath Tumhara in the year 2003 and Mr Gaayab on Zee TV.

He made his film debut through Govind Nihalani’s Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa in the year 1998. This was followed by another Nihalani’s directorial film, Deham in 2001. In 2008, he was starred in the lead role in 68 Pages; a film that exposes the absurdity of the society against the people who suffered an HIV infection. Later, he acted in Chaturanga that is based on Rabindranath Tagore’s novel. In 2009, he played as the father of the lead in the Bollywood fantasy adventure film, Aladin. He is also part of the comic drama film, Shakal Pe Mat Ja and Kagojer Bou in 2011. He got married to Tara, a model and a corporate thoroughbred from Kolkata. The couple met while filming the Bengali science fiction film, Patalghar. Joy is a teacher for Theatre in Education in Delhi. He was once a political journalist in the India Speaks magazine.
