Swaroop Kanchi is a Bangalore based Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer. He makes movies mostly in the English language that carry the theme of misconceptions about certain things. His works reveal elements that are considered taboo. Kanchi’s works include Bangaloored, Black Sugar, Acid and Hong Kong Dreaming.

He took birth in Bangalore, Karnataka on 19th June 1983. He is an independent artist and makes movies only under his production house, Tapas Films. Kanchi is well-known for giving fresh faces a chance in acting and brings out complex characters in his stories. He grew up in Bangalore and studied design in school.

He began with low-budget short films; his first movie, Something Taboo showcased myths about HIV and misconceptions about STDs. His socially relevant work got the critics appraisal. Then, Kanchi made Black Sugar, his first feature film. It got premiered at the NY Film Fest. He then migrated to Los Angeles to work on independent projects.

There he filmed Acid, Taxiwallah, and Sleeping with the enemy’s son. All these movies were made and shot in Los Angeles. After working in Hollywood, Kanchi returned to India to set up an India base and work with homegrown talent. He set up Tapas Films and made short movies for Akanksha Foundation- A NGO to promote education. Then, he collaborated with Dreamworks and made a Hollywood and Bollywood inter-related film. Next, Kanchi filmed Ardh Kumbha- a movie on Hindu pilgrimage. After Ardh Kumbh, Kanchi worked in non-fiction projects on spirituality.

They displayed the cultural heritage of Thailand, India, and Cambodia. In 2007, he directed an English feature film named Hong Kong Dreaming. Shot in Hong Kong, it had Indian and Chinese talent. It premiered at the Bangalore Film Fest and UK International Film Fest. Next, he became the production manager in the short film, Supraman and the School of Necessity.
