Alphonse Puthren

Alphonse Puthren is a versatile Indian director, actor, producer, playback singer, screenwriter and editor. He was born on 10 February 1984 in Aluva, Kerala to Puthren Paul and Daisy Chacko. He completed his schooling from Amrita Vidyalayam in Kochi and his graduation from M.E.S. College in Aluva with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Applications.

He later joined the S.A.E. College in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, where he received his diploma in filmmaking. His earliest works were short films “Arkan” and “Sutrum Vizhi” which he shot during his college years. He wrote and edited its script as well, which narrates the story an unemployed engineer who elopes with a girl against the wishes of her father. Though the movie had a banal plot, Alphonse was critically praised for his intellectual screenplay and inspiring narrative. Both the protagonists were felicitated with the best debut actor and actress honors in Tamil category at the 2013 Filmfare Awards.

Alphonse also lent his mellifluous voice to one of film’s soundtracks, ‘Phone Booth.’ He appeared on the screen for the first time in his next creation “ Premam Click to look into! >> Read More... ” (2015), a coming-of-age romantic drama, where he made a cameo appearance as the ex-fiancé of one of the supporting actresses. Premam, like its predecessor, was shot on low budget but sold out its tickets at the box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing Malayalam movies of all time.

It featured seventeen debut actors and ran for more than two hundred and fifty days at some theatres in Tamil Nadu, becoming the first Malayalam movie to achieve this feat. It bagged twenty-eight out of the thirty-five awards for which it was nominated at IIFA Utsavam, Asiavision, Asianet, Vanitha and ibnlive Award ceremonies.

It consolidated Alphonse’s position in film industry as a remarkable filmmaker. Alphonse has been a key asset to other directors and producers as well. He presently resides in Chennai with his wife, Aleena Mary Anthony, daughter of film producer Alwyn Anthony, and children, Ethan and Aina.
