Sonali Phogat was born in the hamlet of Bhuthan Kalan in Fatehabad, Haryana, on September 21, 1979. Her hometown is Hisar in the state of Haryana. Sonali was born into a Jaat household, her father is a farmer and she has four siblings (one brother and three sisters). She married Sanjay Phogat and has a daughter named Yashodhra Phogat. Sonali Phogat made her television debut in 2006 as an anchor on Doordarshan's Haryanvi show.

In 2019, she ran for Haryana Assembly Elections from the Adampur Constituency. Phogat has worked for the BJP in Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh's tribal districts. She was afterwards appointed to lead the BJP's scheduled Tribes section in Haryana, Delhi, and Chandigarh.
