A. C. Tirulokchandar was born on 11th June in the year 1930 in Arcot, Vellore. He passed away on 15th June 2016 in Chennai at the age of 86. In the early 1960s till the late 1980s he worked as a film director and a screen writer in mostly Tamil films, yet he did diversify in his field and directed some films in Hindi and Telugu. In 1950, while Manthiri Kumari was being shot, as the shooting progressed on its sets, A.C. Tirulokchandar was working as a junior assistant in his early career days. Like most artists, he started at the bottom of the ladder but as the shooting of it progressed, Tirulokchandar became a close friend of M.G. Ramachandra. It was through this friendship he also got to meet the producer A.V. Mejyappan who soon noticed Tirulokchandar’s talent and gave him his first break as a director in the film Veerathirumagan, which was released in the year 1962.

As his debut film turned into an overnight success he soon became a part of the AVM banner. Under them, he made a Hindi movie titled Main Bhi Ladhki Hoon and Nannum Oru Penn in Tamil simultaneously. The latter film won him the National Film Award under the category of being the Best Feature Film in Tamil at the 11th Nation Film Awards. He soon after also won the Filmfare Awards under the category of The Best Film. These awards made him the permanent fixture as one of the directors of AVM films. He was soon seen as the fifth son of A.V. Mejyappan and found a friend in A.V.M. Saravanan. He continued to direct films produced under the AVM banner. He made a romantic comedy film in 1966 titled Anbe Vaa This serial named “Anbe Vaa” is all about a true l >> Read More... . M.G. Ramachandran was the lead in this movie.

He was even in his later years given the task of directing the first ever bilingual suspense thriller ever made again under the AVM banner, in 1967. Its title in Telugu was Ave Kallu and in Tamil was Adhey Kangal. Some of his other acclaimed Tamil films are Aval, Dheerga Sumangali, Thirudan, Vasandatil Oru Naal, Anbe, Bharata Vilas, Aaruyire and Bhadrakali. While he continued to become an acclaimed director and well respected in his field, his job didn’t just go till directing, as he was often seen selecting the colour schemes of the outfits worn by the actors and the set in the film were also designed by him.
