Born on 14th November 1946, Bharathan was an Indian filmmaker, known for being one of the directors who made a revolution in the Malayalam film industry. He is widely known for his unconventional works and is regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers in the Indian film industry of all time. In the 1980s, he, along with Padmarajan and K.G.George, founded a new school of film making in Malayalam cinema, whose films were widely received.
He had directed several films including, Guruvayur kesavan, Aniyara, Aaravam, Lorry, Savithiri, and many more. Apart from directing, he had also written several of his films including, Aaravam, Nidra, Chatta, Devaraagam, etc. Bharathan, after completing his diploma from the College of Fine Arts, entered into the film industry as an art director for the film ‘Gandharavakshetram,’ which was directed by A.Vincent.
He made his directorial debut in the year 1975 with the film ‘Prayanam.’ His films were known for realistically portraying rural life in Kerala. He was known for his bold portrayal of sexual themes in his early films, defying the social conventions and norms about man and woman relationships. He had received many Kerala State Film Awards and a National Film Award in the year 1992 for his feature film named ‘Thevar Magan.’ On 30th July 1998, Bharathan took his last breath at the age of 52.
