Tamil Director R Krishnan

R Krishnan is one among the acclaimed directors in Tamil Cinema during the 40s to 80s. Krishnan was born on 18th July 1909 in Chennai. He is one among the popular duo Krishnan – Panju. He started his career as a lab in charge of Kandhan Studios, which was later renamed as Pakshiraja Studios. The studio was in Coimbatore. Both Krishnan and Panju were working together for the film Araichimani alias Manuneethi Chozhan in 1942. The film was directed by PK Raja Sandow and the shooting was going in Kandhan Studios.

During the shooting, Krishnan and Panju became best buddies. After watching their dedication in their work, Raja Sandow, wanted them to shine as directors. He provided them with an opportunity to direct a film in 1944. Poompavai is their first film together. After a couple of years, they directed Pankajavalli and then Paithiyakkaran. The duo directed the film to help the drama troupe run by “N S Krishnan.” At that time, NSK was behind bars in the murder case of Lakshmikanthan. After he had been relieved from the case, NSK featured in the film. However, the film was produced by NSK under his home banner NSK Pictures. Krishnan – Panju duo is the proud launchers of “C N Annadurai,” the former CM of Tamilnadu. Anna made his debut as the scriptwriter for the film, Nallathambi. Krishnan and Panju are said to be very strict. There had been a pin drop silence when they were in the sets. Krishnan and Panju directed not only Tamil films but Ten Hindi films, three Telugu films, and a Kannada film. Most of their popular films are bankrolled by AVM Productions run by AV Meiyappa Chettiyar. Krishnan’s last film was Malarum Ninaivugal in Tamil in the year 1986.

Krishnan and Panju were the real King Makers of Tamil cinema. Till now, their directorial venture Parasakthi by Sivaji and Raththa Kanneer featured by MR Radha stand in the top crowning as the best films. Krishnan died in the year 1997 at his 87 years. Like his father, he had also worked in Tamil and Hindi films. Due to Kidney failure, Subash died in Chennai on 23rd November 2016.
