Shanjey Kumar Perumal is a Malaysian Film Writer and Director. He completed his degree in Film and Broadcasting Science from the University of Malaysia. He is popularly known for his incredible work is his short films like Nilavukkoru Kaditham, Thaipoosam, and Jagat. He has been a part of the industry for the past 16 years and is now one of the finest directors in the fraternity. He is an active writer and has written almost 300 episode for Malayalam viewers. He is the founder of a Malaysian based company; Skyzen (M) Sdn. This Company has a motive of directing high quality short independent films, documentaries, musical shows and children’s program. He has also done some tremendous work for travelogues and fictional experimental films. His movie Thaipoosam gave him worldwide recognition.

It got premiered at the 36th International Film Festival in Netherlands, in 2006. The movie was so short that it could be narrated like visual poetry. The movie Machai won the Grand Award at the BMW Shorties Malaysia. Shanjey was part of the jury in the same event in 2012. The Day When River Ran Red was another documentary which won the Jury’s award in the KOMAS Freedom Film Festival Southeast Asia in Malaysia. His movie, Jagat was awarded the Best Malaysian Film Award in 2016. It was a crime drama film about growing up inconspicuously and it underlines the predicament of the Indian Malaysians who were neglected by the bequest proprietors and compelled to move to the urban communities, under brutal conditions.

Perumal won the Best Director Award for the film. The film was also screened at the New York Asian Film Festival. The film was about a boy who was the protagonist and suffered abuse from the other three prominent figures. He finally rebels and the movie ends up on an impactful note. His movies are entertaining and thought provoking. His brilliant management skills along with spectacular production knowledge work in his low-budget documentaries. His plan and precision make his work stand apart from other movies. He usually prefers to conserve the tradition and culture of the language in which he is working. His movies always have subtitles so that audiences across the world can enjoy the essence of his work. He enjoys working in Malayalam and Tamil films and encourages people to be proud of their mother tongue. According to him, Malaysia has the best industry for funding movies, and one should never generalize the fact that all movies made there are of low quality.
