Sumathy Ram who is an Independent filmmaker from India, and is a Tamil poet. Her debut movie as a director was “Vishwa Thulasi” which also won the Awards of “Gold Special Jury.” She has won Tamil Nadu Government Award for her poetry in the year 2010 from late J. Jayalalithaa who was the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. She was happy when she got the Award and said that she didn’t think of any Award while writing poems.

She always writes poems for her satisfaction. She has a daughter named “Shri” who is ten years of age. They both live together at Coimbatore. Her husband didn’t live with them who is a film director. Initially, Sumathy used to write poems for her husband to explain her feeling of living separately, and away from each other. And when her husband read her poems, he tries to get them published. According to Sumathy, people connect with her poems because many people live away from their loved ones. Later on, she decided to produce and direct a film. She produced and directed the film named “Vishwa Tulasi.” Some of the names of the actors who have worked in this film are Nanditha Das, Mammootty, Manoj K Jeyan, and much more. Her first movie has received much appreciation from the audiences, magazines, and dailies.

She has completed her MA, Ph.D. in English Literature, graduation in MPhil, etc. She has also lived for twelve years in the United States of America. She met “M.S. Vishwanathan” who is a well-known music director to compose music for her poems. She has planned for around sixty-eight days to execute her dream project named “Vishwa Thuslas.” She has written dialogues, screenplay, lyrics, and has also directed the film. The film was about the personal and social consequences of early marriage. She didn’t have any experience of filmmaking earlier.

She used to visualize the characters of her poems on screen. She has discussed this project with many artists before executing it. Excerpts from an interview with Sumathi Ram. She said that to work with Ilayaraja, and M.S. Vishwanathan was a great experience, and also they gave their best. She was mentally and physically conscious about her dream. That is why she never felt the pressure of making her debut film. For her, the sixty-eight days of planning was a picnic for her with her family. Her husband name is “Ramki Ramakrishna.” He and his mother used to take care of the home while Sumathy was busy in making her debut film. They always encouraged her to fulfill her dreams. She owes her success to them. Her debut film at 38th World Fest- Houston International Film Festival won the Golden Jury Award in the year 2005.
