She played a village belle in the movie. This Assamese actress’ very first film in Tamil ‘Vazhakku Enn 18/9’ was a super hit. Her second film ‘’Ballad of Rustom” was shortlisted for the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards. But it was Tamil crime- thriller Vazhakku Enn 18/9 that was the turning point in her career. She received nomination for the best actress award for her first debut film in Tamil. She rose to prominence not only with Tamil crime thriller but also with Ketan Mehta’s Hindi film. 

Earlier, to pursue her career in films, Urmila joined ‘Film & Television Institute of India’ (F.T.I.I), which she claims was a turning point in her life. She was selected second in entrance examination at the national level in the Institute. 

Urmila is born to Giridhar Mahanta and Ramala Mahanta in Sonapur(Assam). Her mother is a housewife, and her father is a retired government officer. She is blessed with three siblings, two sisters, and one brother. She also appeared in three short feature films. One of her short films ’Aaliya’, had won the Special Critic Award at the 2012 Mumbai International Film Festival. Urmila also appeared in three North-Eastern TV series (‘Murder’, ‘Tejimola’ and ‘Crime Patrol’) Actress Urmila also acted in a Bengali movie ‘Chirodini Tumi Je Amar 2’( 2014) which was a super hit. 

After working in Kollywood, Bollywood & Bengali film Industries, Urmila wanted to make her debut in her homeland Assam. She got four projects in her hometown now. Her two Assamese projects ‘TRP Aru’, ‘Antareen’ are already on the floor, and her other two Assamese films ‘Bokul’ and ‘Kothanodi’ already had begun shooting. She also acted in one more Hindi movie Pareshaanpur where she was cast in a lead role opposite Ameet Dawar.
