Binni Krishnakumar

Binni Krishnakumar is a Chennai-based Malayali playback singer and the wife of the vocalist, Trivandrum Krishnakumar. They are one of the very few male-female Carnatic classical music duos. She had performed in over 150 stages including the numerous performances she did on stage with her husband across South India. Binni was born on June 10, 1974, in Kerala to the late Sri K.N. Ramachandran and Smt. Santha Ramachandran. She started learning the Carnatic Music when she was only seven years old under the guidance of Vidwan Sri. Thiruvizha Surendran.

She earned the National Talent scholarship and came under the tutelage of Sri. Thamarakkad Govindan Namboodiri. In 1989, she bagged the Kalaathilakam title at the Kerala State Youth Festival Committee. She took up B.A and M.A in music in 1994 and 1996 respectively at the University of Kerala. She got the First Rank with first class in M.Phil in music at the Kamarajar University in Madurai. She also donned a doctoral research with the help of Dr. K. Omanakkutty of the University of Kerala. Binni received the first prize at the Kerala University Youth Festivals in 1992 and 1994.

In the year 2000, she also received The Junior Fellowship award by the Government of India (Cultural Department). Aside from all the achievements mentioned above, Binni also received the B-High grade by All India Radio and she became a regular at the AIR Doordarshan and other TV channels. She was featured at AIR’s South Zone Hookup programs. Some of her notable concerts include the Kerala Legislative Assembly’s 40th Annual celebrations.

Binni also made a history when she performed at the center of a big water tank, while the audiences seated on the steps of the four shores. Binni is a renowned musician in Kerala. She became popular by presenting Classical Music through the weekly magazine, NaadaMaadhuri, along with the popular lyricist of the Malayalam films, Sri Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri. She joined her husband Sri Trivandrum K. Krishnakumar in performing duo vocal concerts.

Binni Krishnakumar is from a musical family. She had won the Kalathilaka Pattam in 1989. Binni’s sisters are music teachers and her brother is a violin expert. Binni was called a Thodupuzha star. She is very much interested in Carnatic music, recitation, dance and mono acting. Binni Krishnakumar is one among the disciples of late Balamurali Krishna. She had worked with Balamurali Krishna. Binni’s husband Krishnakumar had a great relationship with Balamurali Krishna and that helped Binni to work with the legend, closely. Despite his popularity and experience, Balamurali Krishna had been humble, stated Binni and Krishnakumar.

Recently, the couple along with other disciples paid tribute to Balmurali Krishna on his 88th birth anniversary in Shree Sarasswathi Vidhyaah Mandheer Institutions in Mettupalayam. They celebrated Balamurali Krishna’s birth anniversary as Balamurali Nada Mahotsav. Binni had completed a video album along with her husband, Krishnakumar, which is about the legendary Balamurali Krishna.

Binni had crooned in movies, including Thambi Vettothi Sundaram, Magizhchi, Thottal Poo Malarum and Mahesh Saranya Matrum Palar. Binni and Krishnakumar’s Aaya Kalaikellam Arasiye compiled by Dr Bala Muralikrishna, is very much popular.

Vasantha Varsham is the latest compilation by Binni Krishnakumar in 2021. Krishnakumar penned the Sanskrit lyrics in the song and the mantras from the song are taken from Vedas.
