DGS Dhinakaran

DGS Dhinakaran was an Indian Evangelist, and a record producer. His full name was Duraisamy Geoffery Samuel Dhinakaran. He was born on July 1, 1935, in Surandai, Tirunelveli District, Madras Presidency, British India. He was the founder of Karunya University and the organization Jesus Calls Ministries. He studied at St. John’s College in Palayamkottai, and graduated with Bachelor’s degree in Science in Mathematics at Madras University in 1955. He was involved for some time in evangelical activities, before leaving his bank job in the October 1962, to evangelize full-time. He founded Jesus Calls Ministries, and at the time of his death, he had more than twenty bases in India, and abroad. He was better known as the most prominent of the Charismatic Evangelists in India.

Allan Anderson, who was an academic specializing in studies of Pentecostalism, saw similarities between his and Oral Robert’s efforts in the United States. He served as the first chancellor of Karunya University. He also played a vital role in establishing a voluntary body Seesha, which was concerned with assisting rural people and educating underprivileged children. He was a member of the Church of South India, and he was among the first Indian Christian leaders to appreciate as a medium for evangelism.

While doing this, he followed a pattern, which is established in the United States, and challenged the conservative ideas of his peers. He broadcasted his messages and opinions on various radio programs, since the year 1972, and he specifically used FEBA Network for this purpose. In the mid-1990s, he started posting on television by Jesus Calls Ministry. He had written more than fifteen books and had recorded many Christian Musical Albums. He died on February 20, 2008, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
