R. Amarendran is one of the most talented Indian Theatre artists known to the Indian Film Industry. He is worked as a theatre director as well as a theatre actor and is known for his impeccable acting skills. He has been conspicuous in his appearance in both theatre plays and films. As a young and a college boy, R. Amarendran was always interested in acting, and when he got an opportunity to act in his college play, he grabbed it. This small part led him to get several small roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan musicals in Chennai. R.Amaredran then started getting offers to act in various English and French plays. He got accepted in many theatre groups in Chennai, which later gave him the opportunity to be one of the four Indians to be selected fie the L’ecole National d’art Dramatique by the French Government. When he returned from France, he shifted from acting to stage directing. He has directed several plays, in both English and French. Some of the well-known plays directed by him are- Tartuffe by Moliere, The Lesson by Eugene Ionesco, and The Maids by Jean Genet.

R. Amarendran’s next ventured into the world of Cinema. This fantastic actor’s debut film was ‘Bale Pandiya’( released in the year 2010), where he played the lead role. He was a supporting actor yet he played an impactful role. This creative and a good-hearted soul didn’t stop his career with just acting. He is not only an actor but also an inspirational author. He is a children’s author who through his writing has explored his childhood memories and has created a small, cheerful world for his young readers. The first book authored by him is the Siri’s Smile in English.

This colourful and joyous book has evoked a world of colour and new things for the children to discover. The book was so highly appreciated that it was re-written in 7 more languages. One of his other book is ‘Salim the Knife-Sharpener,’ which is also a children’s book. R. Amarendran’s contribution as an actor, director and author will always be a matter of pride for India.
