As per the interview given by her to 'The Hindu' her family hailed from the town of Srirangam. Renuka is the eldest daughter, she has two younger brothers. Her husband is Mr. K. Kumaran who is a Chairman and Managing Director of Aloha India.

Renuka has worked in a few Tamil films and about 75 Malayalam movies, after she was introduced to Tamil film director K. Balachander by colleague Geetha. She has worked in her first Hindi movie in 2009 as well; the movie was 'Monsoon Wedding'. Her role was of a woman in the rain.
She is also known for her Tamil movie Ayan, her role was Kaveri Velusamy. For this movie she was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress-Tamil. Renuka acted in a supporting role in the teleserial. Following Kaialavu Manasu,Renuka also did a supporting role in Kadhal Pagadai,after which she became popular and bagged lead roles in Premi,Jannal and Ganga Yamuna Saraswathi. People have appreciated her a lot with good reviews for her performance in Premi.
