Basudev Rath, born Basudev Somnath Rath, was a renowned veteran Odia Music Director. Basudev was born on 7th March 1956 in Balubazar, Cuttack. He was married to Chandna Rath. He went to Ravenshaw Collegiate School up to 7th standard and later completed his education in Birharekrishnapur, in Mamaggarh. His Inclination towards music at a very young age made him learn various musical instruments. He learned to play tabla from Guru Sudhakar. An Orchestra named “Vasudeva Rath and Party” was also formed by him, which initially started performing at Chatrabazaar in Cuttack and later continued at various other places in Cuttack and Odisha.

His father opposed his music education, but that did not distract him from the tradition. Several years later, he made his debut in music direction in the year 1977 through an album “Sakhi Gopinath”, which released in October 1978. One of the hit songs which touched the hearts of Odia moviegoers was “Jhumka tike tu ta halei de“ from the movie Chinha Achinha. His other massive hits were “Maa tume jagatara saha bharasa“, “Lagichi dori mu puri“, “Sagare kule dine dekhili jhia tiye“, “Kau dhana khaila boli”, “Asiba bara tora” and “Kali dekhili gori dekhili”.

The late composer has composed many popular songs meant for frontline actors of the Ollywood industry. He is also known for his compositions in films like Dekh khabar rakh nazar (1982), Main qatil hoon (1984), Pratisodha aparadh nuhen (1989). He composed music for over 150 movies and recorded 50 music albums. He also recorded 80 lyrical plays and 12 thousand gramophone records for television and radio. The eminent director passed away on 7th April 2019 aged 63, after one month of protracted illness at Shri Ramachandra Bhanj Medical College.
