Sterlite Factory filed a petition to the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board to permit them to operate. As the protests on Sterlite and Cauvery had been intense, the pollution control board rejected the permission to operate the factory. So, the factory continues with the maintenance process. Sterlite is a copper ore factory operating in Thoothukudi. As it releases the hazardous substances from the factory, a lot of people in the locality are affected by various diseases. The people, who are protesting against the extension of the factory, stated that the factory had polluted the air, water and land. Many people are said to have been suffering from some skin diseases and many have lost their lives to cancer, say the people in that area. This is the reason why the people are protesting against the factory.
