The wait for a box office success in Tollywood is getting cleaner.
Despite giving one of the biggest commercial blockbusters of Indian cinema in 2024, Telugu cinema is struggling to maintain the momentum for now. Even the recent releases, ‘Aa Okkati Adakku’ and ‘Prasanna Vadhanam’ have failed to invoke any interest in the audiences.
While the situation is not as bad as that of Tamil cinema, and Kannada cinema, it’s been over a month since Tollywood last delivered a proper box office success. While only ‘Hanu Man’, ‘Guntur Kaaram’ and ‘Tillu Square’ managed to cross at least the 100 crore mark, movies like ‘Gaami’, ‘Ooru Peru Bhairavakona’, and ‘Om Bheem Bush’ at least managed to make good profits, if not become huge blockbusters.
However, since ‘Tillu Square’, Tollywood is suffering from a box office drought. Some might say it’s because of the elections, as well as the IPL matches, and rightly so, but they are not the only reasons. Even Vijay Deverakonda’s much awaited ‘The Family Star’ failed to attract the audiences to the theatres. While Suhas’ recent venture ‘Prasanna Vadhanam’ managed to impress the critics, it couldn’t convert the same appreciation into good box office numbers.
All eyes are set on ‘Gangs of Godavari’ and ‘Satyabhama’ now, which will release on 17 May. If none of them work, then Tollywood wouldn’t get any relief until June, when ‘Double iSmart’ and ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ are all set to hit the silver screens.
