Plot

The movie’s plot focuses on a young and ambitious executive at a financial services firm named Lockhart. He is sent to retrieve the CEO of the firm Roland from a ‘wellness center’ in the Swiss Alps. However, he fails to meet and speak with Roland because of the resistance by the staff and Dr. Heinreich. While returning, Lockhart meets with a horrendous accident and when he gains consciousness he finds himself and his driver at the wellness center. He meets an enigmatic young girl named Hannah who doses herself with a mysterious fluid from small blue bottles. What will happen with Lockhart? Why wasn’t anyone allowed to leave the wellness center? What is there in the Blue bottles? All these questions are answered in the movie.

Star Performances

DeHaan is the perfect casting for Lockhart. He feels like a chameleon that fits in the scenes as per the demand. His portrayal of Lockhart in a way enhances the horror element of the story. He effortlessly pulled off the movie. Jason Issac, the famous Lucius Malfoy from the Harry Potter, returns as an antagonist in this film. He plays a calm and authoritative character who is the head of the institute. Mia Goth did a fine job in the film. The rest of the cast adds to the narrative of the film.

Analysis

‘A Cure For Wellness’ is a psychological horror directed by the talented director Gore Verbinski. He attempts to create a horrifying yet beautiful story with larger-than-life set pieces, an amazing cast, and a strong plotline. The unease and suspense throughout the narrative is a trademark of Gore’s direction. In this film, he draws the viewers’ attention to the mysterious wellness center and builds tension around it through dark and unsettling visuals and imagery.  He used a great deal of nuances and little details to amalgamate horror in the film. Bojan’s cinematography in this movie is a work of art. The way he captures the bone-chilling and thrilling visuals of a naturally beautiful landscape is beyond praise. When we talk about the acting performance in the film, DeHaan hit the ball out of the ground with his excellent portrayal of Lockhart with attention to detail.  The way he represented the psychological conflict within Lockhart’s mind and how throughout the film, his morals started to get blurred hooked the audience to the movie’s story. The screenplay somehow fails to impress as it feels as if the writers relied on the shock value, with some predictable twists and turns. They try to incorporate too many genres, like, psychological thriller, dark corporate drama, and romance, which compromise the main storyline of the film. Moreover, the length of the film also tests the patience of the audience. The editing of the film is seamlessly tight and precise while maintaining the continuity of the scenes. However, the first half of the movie could have been a little more compact and tightened. The dark and twisted tale of the mysterious wellness care center and its cure left the audience without any justifiable answers. Though the director tries to replicate the ending of movies, like, Inception or Shutter Island Click to look into! >> Read More... , he fails at the execution of the same.

What’s There?

•         The production value of the film is impressive.

•         The acting performances in the movie hooked the audience.

•         The cinematography of the film enhancing the movie-watching experience.

•         The direction of the film sticks to the narration of the story.

What’s Not There?

•         The sluggish screenplay tests the patience of audience.

•         There are pacing issues in the film.

•         The unnecessary use of shock value dilutes the boldness of the film’s plot.

•         The ending left the audience at a cliffhanger.

Verdict

‘A Cure for Wellness’ is concerned with creating a certain kind of mood and atmosphere to visualize the horrors of the story. The long runtime and the lack of intriguing elements fail to impress the niche audience of the movie. The bizarre reasons associated with the film’s climax spoil the whole build-up of the movie’s story. It is a bold attempt indeed but with several plot holes and some obnoxious scenes that make the viewers uncomfortable. If you are into psychological horrors and want to explore some creepy and bold visuals, you can try out this film.
