Analysis

How easy is it to conceal your identity? How easy is it to be someone you are not?

‘Albert Nobbs’ takes these dilemmas head-on. Set in the Victorian era, this is a poignant drama about a woman, who is so traumatized by her scars that she finds it better to live as a man.

With a subject as sensitive as this, the film could have gone anywhere. However, Glenn Close as the co-writer sees to it that the film is anything but boring. As Hubert Page, the performance of Janet McTeer is incredible. Nowhere does the film sound preachy, it is both evocative as well as a commentary on the social ills of the era gone by.

The film might not appeal to those who are high on adrenaline. But for those, who have a taste for something unique, this film is the perfect delight. The camerawork is equally brilliant, and we get a taste of the Victorian era. The film does have some issues with the pace, but the overall experience is intriguing.
