Plot

The movie is set a decade after the expedition of Prometheus, the story begins with an onboard accident on the Covenant, a colony ship carrying 2000 passengers and frozen embryos, headed to another inhabited planet. The captain of the ship dies in the accident leaving his wife ( Katherine Waterston Katherine Waterston aka Katherine Boyer Waterston >> Read More... ) grieving. The crew is then led by the second-in-command Oram ( Billy Crudup Georgann and Thomas Henry gave birth to Billy Crud >> Read More... ). Micheal Fassbender who plays David in the previous movie Prometheus is now on board as Walter. He is a developed version of David with controlled emotions, and personality. The loss of their captain leaves them confused and vulnerable, and that is when they receive a distress signal from a planet fit for habitation. They take a detour to visit the planet assuming they must have missed a nearby planet. They discover that this had been the planet on which Prometheus had landed. In search of their fellow seniors, they go deeper into the arena, and are attacked by aliens who either want to kill them or impregnate them. But, they have a savior in a black cloak, he manages to get them safe in his adobe on the planet. The savior is none other than David. What happens next is the turning point in their lives.

Analysis

Ridley Scott has just added a new notch to his belt of hits. Initially, you might think of what a new alien movie could offer you beside alluring traps, deformed aliens, and sheer stupidity of some characters, but to your surprise, Alien: Covenant brings you much more. It is a combination of good storyline, characters, and effects. The movie begins with a flashback to the time David was created and David has a chat with his creator (addressed as his father); for if you are an alert viewer you would know he returns. Both the android versions David and Walter look the same but have different personalities, Walter finds it envious that David could evolve and change his feelings and emotions. At this point, you know that you will not be able to make out who's the wrong guy. The characters are well written, and are brilliantly executed. The direction and cinematography keep us hooked and on the edge the entire time. The end, however, has been the highlight. There’s not much scope of disappointment apart from the same old-school initial twists.

Star Performances

The movie has quite a brilliant star cast with Micheal Fassbender being the prime attention. The actor has outdone all his past performances, and played both the roles with immense personification. Katherine Waterston has also performed well. The entire supporting cast has done well.

What’s there?

• Different twists and good execution.

• Brilliant performances by the actors.

• Good CGI effects.

• A good cliff-hanger.

What’s not there?

Initially, the movie suffers from predictable twists and bad decision making of the captain. But, picks up later on.

Verdict

Alien: Covenant is a justified installment of the series. It offers much more and has a different zing to it. It has definitely built up curiosity and interest for the next installment.
