Plot

On Staten Island, the Kemble family's already strained bonds snap under Christmas pressure. Truck-driving Todd juggles bills, caring for his war-scarred brother Kent and developmentally disabled sister DeeDee, while mom Elaine copes. Kent wrestles with PTSD, their dad Ed hides a war guilt secret, and a new woman stirs the pot. As hidden truths bubble up, can forgiveness mend their cracked family before everything shatters?

Star performance

Theo Rossi playing the role of Todd Kemble, delivers a nuanced performance, portraying his exhaustion, frustration, and deep love for his family with raw honesty. Karen Allen as Elaine Kemble brings tremendous empathy to the role, showcasing her unwavering love and the toll it takes on her spirit. Both characters, Rossi and Allen, deliver powerful performances that anchor the film’s emotional core.

Analysis

The movie starts slowly and steadily. It keeps unfolding like the layers of an onion, revealing many aspects like PTSD, addiction, long-kept wounds, etc. The cinematography is well-captured and keeps you glued to the screen.

When you think you have reached your peak emotional state by pre-climax, the climax comes over. The climax brings on the waterworks and a vulnerable state. The performances and background score are well justified. This film is a reminder that family bonds can be the strongest chain and the tightest noose. The movie promotes family values and a sense of hope and glimmer. Overall, this movie is an emotional rollercoaster ride.
