CAST & CREW
A real incident that happened in the early hours of 2009's new years eve.
PLOT: Oscar Grant III gets involved in an argument with his wife before boarding the train. She doubts him that he is cheating her over someone else. After boarding the train, he meets his former inmate, who tries to assault him. Due to the ruckus caused, Grant is stopped by the cops. One of the cops shoots at him. On his way to the hospital, Grant dies. ANALYSIS: Ryan Coogler, the director of the movie, is basically from the same area where Grant belongs to, and is about the same age as that of Grant. This turned to be a big merit for him. He was able to deliver the output of his movie with the exact and the real feel. One of the beautiful scenes in the movie was the moment the countdown starts for the new year; everyone together count with so much of positivity and happiness all around. The director is having the hold of a strong control over the emotions involved in the movie. It is so good to see a young and a dedicated person like Coogler.
STAR PERFORMANCES: Jordan amazingly expresses the reactions of Grant at his final moments. He was able to reproduce the same reactions on screen. The fear, anxiety of Grant was expressed beautifully. Octavia Spencer gave her rhetoric performance representing all the aspects of Grant's mother. She expressed many notions, such as her unconditional love towards her son and her anxiety for his wrong decisions.
WHAT'S THERE? Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's gorgeous shots took in the close proximity using 16mm camera is something to be looked out for.
WHAT'S NOT THERE? Restriction or control of foul language is missing. You can expect many beeps here and there throughout the movie. It won't be steady at times, and lurches here and there.
VERDICT: Simple things make a great impact.
