Plot

Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) is set in the future, specifically in 2035. The Earth has been saved from the attacks of Kaiju monsters, by sealing off their entrance into the world, the war famously known as the Battle of Breach. This was possible only due to one man's sacrifice Stacker Pentecost. Now, the audience is shown his son Jake Pentecost, who resembles nothing like his father and sells Jaeger parts in the black market to make a living. Soon the word spreads out that humans are going to face another Kaiju threat and this one will be more deadly than the last one. This ignites Jake to return as a cadet pilot with Amara Namani (an orphan girl he had befriended) as an ally. The story progresses as they fight their internal and external battles and prepare for the battle that could end the entire human race.

Star Performances

In Pacific Rim: Uprising the most notable performance is delivered by Boyega, who portrays Jake Pentecost, the son of Stacker Pentecost. He immerses himself into the character, accurately channeling the internal conflict in Jake's mind as he heads an entire army of Jager pilots. Throughout the movie, Boyega's performance as Jake doesn't make you feel like he is acting, the flow comes naturally to him.

Analysis

Pacific Rim: Uprising is a sequel to Pacific Rim, but somehow manages to not live up to the previous movie. The themes of unity and self-conflict are explored among many others. While the concept is unique, monsters fighting robots in the movie fail to deliver it in a mesmerizing way. The CGI effects used here mess up this film even more instead of enhancing its audience appeal. It has a good start and gets the audience intrigued for a while, but as the Pacific Rim Uprising progresses, it is filled with unavoidable cliches and blatant scenes. The script is where the movie falters most, the climax part could have been structured and plotted way better. Even the dialogue could use a lot of work. To summarise, the director tried to continue the legacy of the previous movies but failed miserably.

What’s There?

  • The portrayal of Boyega as Jake Pentecost is appealing to the audience.

What’s not There?

  • A properly structured storyline is missing throughout the screenplay.
  • The new cast has been introduced but is not given enough screen time for the audience to connect with them.

Verdict

If Pacific Rim was your all-time favorite and you can’t wait to see how things unfold next, you can watch Pacific Rim: Uprising, to satisfy your curiosity. But don't expect anything extraordinary or marvelous; This movie is supposed to be one of those films you watch when there is nothing better to do. Although it's a new concept, more effort could make it a little more appealing to the viewers.
