The Layover is a comedy film directed by William Macy and scripted by David Hornsby with the star cast of Alexandra Daddario Alexandra Daddario is a renowned Actor and a Model >> Read More... , Kate Upton, Matt Barr, and Kal Penn Kalpen Suresh Modi also known as Kal Penn is an Ac >> Read More... , in lead roles.

Kate and Meg, friends for a long time, decide a getaway from the hum of the city. Only to fall for the one man, at once! This movie unfolds as a competition between the two girls, trying to woo a man against one another.

Plot

The movie centers around two working professionals, who decide to spontaneously board a flight to Fort Lauderdale, to escape the monotony of their tedious routines, with Kate, a high school teacher, and Meg, a saleswoman.

Things take a turn for the two longtime friends when they find themselves seated next to a very handsome man. Things get ruthless and ugly when the two fall for the same man and try every possible trick in the book to woo Ryan. The film drags on with the ruthless eye for an eye game, with layovers extending due to the sudden change in weather.

The movie explores the tenderness of their longtime friendship and makes the lead females realize whether or not it is worth risking their friendship over a man.

Star Performance

Alexandria Daddario as Kate, and Kate Upton as Meg, bring out the authenticity and genuineness of the characters played by the actresses. The revenge tactics and charm displayed by the actresses do the plot, justice. While,Ryan, a character played by Matt Barr woos over the ladies with his charming and alluring aura.

Analysis

The movie falls flat with repetitive games, over and over again. Though the cast does try to live up to their parts, the script of the movie, at one point doesn't go anywhere. It keeps revolving in circles. However, underlying themes of emotional support, friendship, and dependence is subtly explored, which adds mellowness to the film.

What's there?

  • The movie is fast-paced and doesn’t make the audience lose interest, pacing-wise.
  • Subtle twists in the movie keep the audience hooked.
  • A light comedy for hearty laughs for viewers.

What's not there?

  • A repetitive script makes it a one-time watch.
  • Since the movie falls into UA rating, the movie is not for family viewership
  • The Layover gets cliched regarding the interactions between the female leads.

Verdict

William Macy is known for his well-crafted comedy films. However, this film needs to be revisited on several accounts. Viewers may give it a pass or keep it as a one-time watch since the film doesn't offer much build-up or drama. Even the comedic scenes seem too cliched for the genre which has some better movies on similar themes out there.
