Plot
Janaan revolves around the life of a Pashtun immigrant student in Canada, Meena Khan. The movie starts with her traveling back to Pakistan for her cousin Palwasha’s wedding. In the wedding festivities, she encounters several people and one of them is Daniyal. He immediately develops a fondness towards her and does everything in his power to pursue Meena. On the other hand, Meena has fallen for Asfandyar, the bride’s adopted brother.

Also, Asfandyar gets to know a harsh truth about his school’s trustee Ikramullah. Soon he takes a stand upon it but no one believes him and another series of misunderstandings emerge. Daniyal again tries approaching Meena and is turned down brutally while Meena figures out a way to propose to Asfandyar. Meena also receives an excellent job offer from Canada. The family denounces Asfandyar as their actual son and he is now treated as an outcast.

Star Performances

Janaan is one of the rare films that focus on the lives of female protagonists such as Meena Khan. The role of Armeena Khan as the main character has to be one of the main decisions leading to this film’s success. She is depicted as a Pashtun student living in Canada who has traveled back for her cousin’s wedding. Her expressions, remarks, and impactful acting have hooked the viewers since the beginning. Especially her dialogue delivery and voice modulation are commendable.

Analysis

Janaan can be easily categorized as a romantic comedy with many twists in the story. This movie mainly falters when it comes to the execution of the storyline. Many subplots are introduced such as Meena’s job offer or Asfandyar’s disputes with his family, but none of them are resolved satisfactorily. Rather these twists have deviated the focus from the main storyline and many loopholes are observed even there.

But some merits of this movie stop it from being an absolute flop. The comic relief is much appreciated at times and Daniyal’s mockable acts are quite refreshing for the audience. Also, the choice of cast is quite accurate. All the actors fit their roles effortlessly as if tailor-made for them. The music pieces in between provide a good source of entertainment.

• The execution of the script ought to be more structured.
• The character growth is not visible or significant for the protagonist.

Verdict

Janaan is one of the films that tries to blend humor with societal issues such as child abuse. It also subtly throws light on the issues that the public shuns upon. It can easily be categorized as a one-time watch a romantic thriller with a tinge of comedy.
