The film Jumbo, released in 2008, is director Kompin Kemgumnird's attempt at a morally wholesome kids movie, and a reasonably good one. It is a contemporary take on a classic childhood film, family-oriented and filled with lessons to learn. Plot

The story revolves around a young elephant, Jumbo, raised solely by his mother in a tight-knit herd of elephants. He is a happy-go-lucky character, and his life remains undisturbed by troubles and woes. But his life is soon flipped upside down. He travels in search of his long-lost father, Yudhveer Singh. In the process, he gets lost and separated from his mother and community. Jumbo becomes very motivated, overcoming all obstacles in his way. He becomes a war elephant and finds out the truth, that his father was a brave warrior killed in war. This prompts Jumbo to seek vengeance. He successfully does that by bringing justice to his father's death. The movie ends as it starts, with Akshay Kumar singing about how everything will be okay.

Star Performance

The film features voiceovers by some of the biggest names in the industry. Jumbo, the main character, is voiced by Akshay Kumar. Other characters include Devi, voiced by Dimple Kapadia, and Sonia, voiced by Lara Dutta. These characters are Jumbo's pillars, helping him through his journey.

Akshay Kumar's voice adds a playfulness to Jumbo's voice that suits his almost boyish personality, yet his involvement in the movie was somewhat avoidable. However, Rajpal Yadav, who voices the character of Dildar Yadav, cannot be ignored in terms of his comic timing and charisma.

Analysis

The plot of Jumbo, though cliche, may be its most significant plus point. At its core, the film is a classic, with a somewhat predictable plot, life lessons taught, and a clean and righteous moral to end the show, but it goes even deeper than that. When Jumbo learns more about his family and his fate, the narrative begins to take a complex turn. It explores mature events and feelings, making it emotionally resonant to more than one demographic of people.

When talking about animation, Jumbo does not meet expectations. Although for the time that it was released, the makers of the film had to make do with the limited resources they had. Yet, the quality of the animations is subpar in comparison to some of the animated classics.

Additionally, the duration of the movie is far too short. This prevents a lot of characters and plotlines from reaching their full potential. The plot fails to develop into a well-rounded narrative.

However, the soundtrack that was composed by Loy Mendonsa and Ehsaan Noorani is exceptional. There are not many songs in the film, but the tracks are cheerful and wholesome and everything that you would look for in a children's movie. Furthermore, this is an excellent way for parents to teach values to their children.

What's There?

● It has a wholesome plot and good morals.

● The storytelling is interesting.

What's Not There?

● The plot is too rushed sometimes, preventing the story and characters from developing.

● It is not the best animation or visual effects.

Verdict

This film is mostly a way for kids to learn the importance of friends and family. It also teaches them about the process of self-discovery. Criticisms can be made against the film, but it is essential to remember that it is a children's film. It has all you could look for in that regard and promises a wholesome experience if nothing else.
