Bollywood is known for making crappy masala films which audience go crazy for, ignoring the realistic and meaningful films which the industry produces. “The Slum Stars” is one such film which highlights the plight of slum children, and the struggles they have to face while growing up. Directed by Sandeep Singh Bawa, this film has the power to keep you gripped by the enthralling performances of the star cast.

Plot:

The film is based on the story of three abandoned children who live in the slum named as Kahaniya, Gudiya, and Chandu who lead a troubled life in slums. As the movie progresses, a local criminal Ghutan enters who happens to be a Child trafficker. Ghutan happens to follow a swami who is also a goon in the garb of a swami and has close ties with Netaji a political leader who is the master of criminal activities. Listening to the swami, Ghutan along with his aid Surma hatches a plan to sell these three children. One day Surma tries to sexually molest Gudiya. That’s when the kids decide not to let anyone ruin their lives and escaped from the traffickers. After escaping, they somehow travelled from the city through the windy roads and reached a little village in Rajasthan where they met a Ghost. This ghost unites with them to teach these criminals a lesson.

Analysis:

The film could have been a lot better direction wise, but consider this was the first Bollywood film of Sandeep Singh Bawa we can always hope that he improves his game up as a director. Also, the writers could have included some strong scenes as the movie becomes monotonous after a while. The idea of involving a ghost seems child-like which very well describes why it is a children’s film.

Star-Performances:

The only saving grace of this film is the performances of the star cast. The child artists Abhiraj Thakur, Chiragdeep, Ridhima and Yashwant Chopra are like a treat to watch. They perfectly portray the distraught children with so much conviction. Harry Sachdeva Bio coming soon... >> Read More... as Ghutan again proves why he is such a brilliant actor. The rest of the cast also gives average performances.

What’s there?

• There is an innocence in the characters of the children who want to become something despite the struggles

• Realistic Actors and situations.

• Great cinematography

What’s not there?

• The plot could have been better since the movie is a drab

• Music seems to lackluster.

Verdict:

There is no harm in watching this film at least once. You need to give it a go just for the sake of performances.
