Besides being an out and out comedy film, “ War Chhod Na Yaar Click to look into! >> Read More... ” is from a genre – loosely termed as ‘war comedy’, that has rarely been tried out in India before, although it has been quite common in the West with the huge hangover of the two World Wars. Of course, the end of the wars helped in generating a climate in which taking comic interpretations of historical facts became easier. With Indo-Pak relations always on a simmer, it is understandable why such attempts had not been made earlier.

Plot: The plot of the film is set in the very unusual and unlikely scenario of an Indo-Pak border post that sees the two opposing sides in open camaraderie. The two protagonists, in this case, are Captain Rajveer Singh ( Sharman Joshi Sharman Joshi was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra to a >> Read More... ) from India and Captain Qureshi (Javed Jaffery) from Pakistan, both of whom are battalion commanders. While in their official stance they are always involved in taking up hostile positions against each other, in non-combative situations they are shown patting each other on the back while engaging in continuous banter and conversations of a personal nature besides indulging in games common on both sides, like Antakshari besides relishing each other’s largely common culinary delights. While all these continue behind the barbed wires, the soldiers on both sides are greeted by an enterprising lady TV journalist Ruth Dutta ( Soha Ali Khan Soha Ali Khan was born into a royal family. She is >> Read More... ). She is there to cover the daily lifestyles of the soldiers on both sides for her TV documentary and perhaps take back her own findings about the similarities and dissimilarities of the lifestyles on the two sides as well as the effect of the hostility that exists on an official level between the two nations, on their day to day lives. She is also ostensibly there to cover an impending series of clashes between the countries, making the ordinary soldiers on both sides wondering – why fight wars at all?

Review: Debutant director, Faraz Haider Faraz Haider is an Indian filmmaker, writer, and d >> Read More... deserves credit to have ventured into a relatively uncharted territory –the genre of war comedy, and that too in the backdrop of Indo-Pak rivalries on the war front. He also needs appreciation for his guts! Regarding the treatment of this subject, it must be said that he has not tried to gloss over tricky situations through niceties. The humour is a combination of plain slapstick and nuanced, but largely situational comedy due to the peculiar context of the theme.

Haider, who is also credited with the story and the screenplay, would have to take largely the credit (as well as the blame) for the film. The first half where he presents the positive side of the Indo Pak interactions is indeed handled very ably with concepts like Antakshari thrown in for good effect. It is, however, in the second half that ne seemed to have faltered being unsure how to handle the situation when war breaks out. The lead actors Javed Jafri and Sharman Joshi, both acknowledged comic actors in their own rights, have delivered their comic roles with maturity and just the right amount of balance. Soha Ali Khan in a now familiar role of the enterprising TV journo seems to have modelled her character on one of the more well-known lady TV anchors while Dalip Tahil Dalip Tahil is one of the most renowned evergreen >> Read More... in multiple roles is good in bringing out the ethnic variety of the characters he portrays.

Verdict: No doubt it has its entertainment value and is quite watchable for most sections of moviegoers.
