which delivers a strong message in a simple way. It is based on the Marathi Film,‘Jau Tithe Khau’ which was released in the year 2007 . It was also awarded the 2009 National Award for Best Film on Social Issues.
PLOT
The film tells the story of Armaan Ali a truck driver in Mumbai who goes back to his village in Hyderabad to find a prospective groom for his daughter Muskaan. Like any other villages, Armaan also faces rising difficulties due to a drought situation that also raises his financial difficulties.
To find an end to his problems, Armaan goes to a government office to get a well built in his village. The entire site inspections happen, all measurements are taken, continuous visits keep happening and with this, Armaan keeps shelling his money. Everything is done, except that there is no well. Armaan doesn’t get his well.
Armaan and Muskaan realize the web of corruption and lies they are caught in. But they won’t give up. They decide to fight back. So they go and file a missing complaint in which they state that their well has been stolen. A story that nobody believes. But their struggle continues. Will they be able to expose this scam and get their ‘baoli’ back or get subdued by the political fiasco that is so evident in our country?
Analysis
Like almost every other Shyam Benegal film this movie also comes with a strong message in the end which mesmerizes us and leaves us to think. And like every other film of his, in this movie too, he goes back to the village and adopts satire to deliver his message. Shyam Benegal is a man of technique, and his technique is evident in this movie. It is a benchmark film.
