Plot

An acclaimed director is called to a reality show, which claims to give an insight into someone’s past life. When the director is subjected to the treatment, he narrates about an abandoned project that could have changed the face of Kannada cinema and about Ranganayaka. Who is this Ranganayaka? What is his connection with the Kannada film industry?

Star Performance

The only good thing associated with this project, if at all, is the efforts of the supporting actors. If not for them, Ranganayaka was not very far from being a certified disaster.

Analysis

Imagine you have a concept for a satirical project. You get an actor with whom your professional bonding is great. You get some good actors and technicians as well. What could go wrong? Well, ‘Ranganayaka’ is the perfect case study of what goes wrong despite having a sure-shot recipe for box office success.

This film takes potshots at both the establishment, as well as the stakeholders of the Kannada film industry. The subject was such that failure was not an option. Yet, this movie failed, and badly.

Why? Because the makers forgot the most basic thing: an engaging storyline. For all the visionary ideals of Guruprasad, the narrative was so outlandish and bizarre that even sarcasm could not have saved this film. This kind of reminds us of a Hindi political drama, ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’. It claimed to reveal the reality of Indian politics. But despite having a brilliant story, the treatment was so amateurish that even a parody video on the same subject would have been ten times better.

The same is the case with ‘Ranganayaka’. The narrative is extremely ludicrous, and despite the short runtime, the viewers will find it hard to maintain their patience. However, there is a difference between inspiration and imitation, which the makers failed to acknowledge.

Even the acting performances failed to salvage this film. Jaggesh did try his best but ended up as a caricature of his previous roles. Only a few supporting actors like Yogaraj Bhat tried to save this film. But their efforts were as worthy as using a broom to stop a storm!

Verdict

‘Ranganayaka’ is a golden opportunity lost. The film could have addressed the ills of the Sandalwood in a way none else could. The vision was not bad, but the execution of the same is a different story. Watch it only if you wish to test your patience skills.
