Plot

Several individuals go missing. Some innocent folks are trapped in a murder mystery. All this is eerily connected to a vegetarian restaurant, run by Subanna. Who will crack this code?

Star Performances

The two main highlights of this film are Sandeep Sunkad and Rangayana Raghu.

While Sandeep surprises many with his innovative touch to an otherwise predictable plot, Rangayana Raghu gives one of the most memorable performances as a benevolent cook, with multiple layers to his otherwise docile personality.

Analysis

Ever heard of the Tim Burton Tim Burton was born on August 25th, 1958 at Burban >> Read More... musical ‘Sweeney Todd’? If yes, then imagine the same environment, but in modern-day India, in a quaint region of Karnataka, where the protagonist has the same traits, but instead of using his ‘victims’ as meat, he uses them as ‘fuel’.

Yes, that’s ‘Shakahaari’ in a nutshell. This film only goes on to prove how little of Kannada cinema we know about. Writer cum director Sandeep Sunkad uses the power of the pen to create an intriguing world, with suspense and thrills in just the right amount. Not many would even believe that is only his debut venture as a feature film director.

The camerawork by Vishwajith Rao, only adds to the mystery around the region, as well as the narrative. If not greater than ‘ Drishyam Click to look into! >> Read More... ’, ‘Shakahaari’ can be at least close enough to the classic in terms of creative brilliance.

In Rangayana Raghu, Sandeep has found his desi ‘Sweeney Todd’. The way he has performed this role is phenomenal. He has been matched in terms of intensity by Gopal Deshpande, who portrays the role of the investigating cop. Even the performances of Sreeharsha Gobhatt and Prathima Nayak are great. The background music of this film is another plus point, for which no amount of praise would be enough. Full marks to Mayur Ambekallu for that.

If there is any flaw at all, it is probably the sequence of events post the second half. However, the flaws are almost negligible, and don’t ruin the overall experience at all.

Verdict

‘Shakahaari’ is that brilliant thriller that not many expected from a debutant director. However, Sandeep Sunkad’s attempt at a crime thriller is simply phenomenal. The acting performances are like the cherry on the icing. You must not miss this film at any cost!
