Plot

In the early 1950s, despite India’s freedom, a hamlet, Nelakondapalli, is still under the oppressive rule of "Dorasani". A gifted singer, Mallamma, is forced to live in hiding, due to Dorasani’s hatred for music. Her true parentage is revealed to her by Kulkarni, who reminds her of the bravery of her parents, Rajanna and Lachamma, who fought until their last breath for the freedom of their motherland. A determined Mallamma now sets out all alone towards Delhi, to persuade PM Nehru to investigate her matter. Can Mallamma win against all odds?

Star Performances

With a child leading from the front, V Vijayendra Prasad has made his priorities crystal clear. He has ensured that every member of the audience feels entertained.

Baby Annie as the singing prodigy Mallamma is endearing, as well as captivating. She is ably supported by the likes of Nagarjuna, Sneha, Nassar, Pradeep Rawat, etc. Even Swetha Menon as the chief antagonist Dorasani has done justice to her role.

Analysis

Following an extremely successful stint with the pen, V Vijayendra Prasad decided to try his hands at direction again. Most of his films are either emotionally endearing or culturally thought-provoking. However, with ‘Rajasingam,’ he decided to make an engaging historical drama.

Backed by an ever-enthusiastic Nagarjuna, Vijayendra Prasad has made a power-packed commercial entertainer. With ‘Rajasingam,’ you get all the vibes that are typically associated with a Rajamouli film. The movie is emotional, entertaining, and above all, full of action.

Baby Annie as the protagonist Mallamma is the star attraction of this film. She is both enchanting and captivating as Mallamma. Nagarjuna as the rebellious Rajanna packs a solid punch, and so does the supporting cast comprising the likes of Sneha, Nassar, Pradeep Rawat, etc. Even Swetha Menon as the antagonist Dorasani does full justice to her role, evoking disgust from the audience for her character.

Yes, the editing could have been tighter, and some of the sequences could have been crisper in terms of emotional engagement. However, the minor glitches aren’t that glaring to distract the audience from the overall experience.

What's There?

  • Brilliant screenplay and direction by V Vijayendra Prasad
  • Engaging performance by Baby Annie
  • Solid support from actors like Nagarjuna, Nassar, Sneha, Pradeep Rawat, etc.
  • A powerful performance from Swetha Menon

What's Not There?

  • Minor glitches in the editing and emotional engagement of the script

Verdict

‘Rajasingam’ is a historical drama deeply embedded with emotions. The performances of Nagarjuna and Baby Annie are the highlight of this film. Except for a few flaws, this film packs a solid punch. Do go and watch this if you like grand-scale period dramas.
