Plot

In the 1980s, Kathir is pursuing his higher studies at a government college in Chittur, Palakkad district. He is immediately attracted to Sara, who studies at the same college. However, their sweet dreams are ruined by the discrimination towards outsiders, including Kathir, who is a Tamilian. How will he fight against such injustice?

Star Performances

The supporting cast is the pillar that somehow holds this film. Karunas as the sympathetic professor does his best in making the role convincing enough.

GV Prakash Kumar and Mamitha Baiju also do their bit to make up for the mess made by the narrative.

Analysis

Imagine you have a success formula for a blockbuster movie. Your hero is suffering injustice, and he decides to fight against it. You get all the classic tropes needed for the perfect mass masala. Yet, your film ends up like a bland, English breakfast. What went wrong?

This is something most viewers would be asking themselves after watching ‘Rebel’. Not many would even think of solving the bitter regionalism in some colleges from the southern parts of India, let alone address it through mediums like books, films, etc.

However, Nikesh RS took a risk with his film ‘Rebel’, which depicts the injustice Tamil students had to face in the local colleges of Kerala at one point. At some point, you would be reminded of films like ‘ Ayutha Ezhuthu Ayutha Ezhuthu is a Tamil TV serial that aired on >> Read More... ’ and ‘ Haasil Haasil is an Indian-Hindi language serial which is >> Read More... ’, due to the campus politics.

However, does the movie do justice to the subject? Sadly, that is not the case here. For all its grand settings, ‘Rebel’ sticks out like a sore thumb due to its shoddy writing, and the excessive focus on hero worship. Agreed that ‘Rebel’ was not supposed to be rooted in realism. However, there is a difference between making a film entertaining and making the film over the top. ‘Rebel’ unfortunately chose the second way. The editing is anything but impressive.

The visuals are not bad for a movie like this. You are transported to the Kerala of the 80s, and full marks to the cinematographer for that. Apart from the camera work, the only redeemable quality of this film is the acting by most of the star cast. GV Prakash Kumar and Mamitha Baiju may not have hit it out of the park, but at least they tried their best to make up for the mess. The supporting actors have done complete justice to their roles, especially Karunas, who plays the role of the sympathetic Tamilian professor.

What’s There

What’s Not There

  • Unimpressive editing
  • Terrible execution of a promising plot
  • Bad direction by Nikesh RS

Verdict

‘Rebel’ could have been a cult classic, had the makers focused a little bit on the basics. The acting performances and the cinematography have been superb. However, the direction and the overall narrative are a completely different story. Watch it if only for the performances of GV Prakash Kumar, Mamitha Baiju, and Karunas.
