The season also introduced Martin Henderson as a new regular character, Dr. Nathan Riggs. After 3 months of Richard and Catherine’s wedding, Meredith now lives in her old house, and is adjusting to her life with Maggie and Amelia. Andrew becomes the new roommate of Arizona, and Bailey becomes Chief of Surgery against Tracy McConnell. Meredith makes up with Amelia, and gets appointed as Chief of General Surgery by Bailey. Meredith’s new contract has very little pay off and she finally stands up for herself which was the only lesson that Bailey wanted to teach her. Maggie receives invitation for her ex-boyfriend’s wedding, and Jackson and April’s relationship worsen so Jackson moves out of their house.

Owen teaches interns about disclosing a bad news to dead patient’s families so Meredith shares her experience of Derek’s death. Maggie remembers her childhood memories when she was a sickle-cell experiment participant, and Callie introduces her new girlfriend, Penny, who is the same physician to give the news of Derek’s death which puts Meredith and Arizona in a difficult position. April avoids Jackson, and Callie tells that Penny is a new transfer resident so Meredith tells everyone the truth which makes Amelia to kick her out. Owen & Amelia bond, while Jo & Stephanie fail to mend their friendship. Penny apologises to Meredith one more time and Meredith tries to teach her against Amelia’s wishes, but later Callie calls her out for bullying Penny instead of teaching her. Richard helps Meredith to keep her personal issues aside and work with Penny. Bailey and Ben fight about Jackson living with them. Maggie and Owen are angered after finding out that Bailey decided to hire Nathan Riggs without consulting them.

Rumours spread about Owen and Nathan’s relationship, while Meredith and Amelia continue to fight and it increases when Amelia finds out that Owen was talking to Meredith but not her, so Meredith says that Amelia should leave the house. Jo and Alex’s relationship starts to deteriorate because of Meredith, but it is revealed that he was actually planning a proposal with Meredith’s help. Jo patches up with Stephanie, and April & Jackson face the inevitable. Arizona struggles in finding a partner and Meredith has a word with Owen’s mother regarding him and Nathan, and finds out that he once had a sister. Meredith is violently attacked by her patient which makes Amelia guilty. Meredith struggles to move on but later forgives the patient after Richard advises her. Amelia tries to patch up with Meredith but she denies it, and Meredith tells Alex to confess his love to Jo which he does. Owen confesses to Amelia that Nathan was with his sister at the time of her death which he can’t forgive. Callie & Penny, and Jo & Alex finally make-up, and Richard learns that Andrew is dating Maggie so he makes Andrew his scut monkey. Jackson gives the divorce to April, after which she reveals that she is pregnant.

Amelia works with Penny after Nathan makes her realize Penny’s talent. Jo confronts Meredith about the way she treats her so Meredith agrees that she can treat Jo better. Meredith is asked out by Will, and Alex and Arizona try to convince April to tell about her pregnancy to Jackson. Ben learns about the huge difference between his and Bailey’s income. Meredith fails to date even after getting support from colleagues. Will comes at the hospital and offers Meredith a lift and they end up having dinner together. Arizona tells Jackson about April’s pregnancy which makes them fight over raising the baby, and it makes April to feel betrayed from Arizona. Will spends the night at Meredith’s house, but she has a nervous breakdown and kicks him out. Callie gets panicked to introduce Sofia to Penny. Maggie confronts Andrew about ignoring her and breaks it off. Amelia ditches Owen, while Catherine has a talk with April regarding the pregnancy and collects information to get custody rights of the baby. Will again meets Meredith and she reveals that he is her first date after Derek so she freaked out, to which he decides to back off as she is worth waiting for. Competition for the Preminger grant comes in which Penny participates, unknown to Jo and Stephanie.

Catherine and Richard have a face off when he comes to know that she wants to sue Jackson for custody of the baby which April misunderstands and files a restraining order against Jackson but she sees a note in a crib saying that he will agree to whatever she wants for the baby as he doesn’t want to fight. Penny wins the grant which upsets Stephanie and shocks Callie. Hospital is on lockdown and Ben & Andrew perform a surgery in which the baby and mother die which leaves Bailey in a difficult position, as Ben’s boss and wife, so she seeks Richard’s advice. Ben becomes angry at Bailey on not taking his side so she assembles a panel for his case who announce him as innocent but she still banishes him for 6 months from the surgical resident program which he denies to follow by returning to the OR. Meredith teases Stephanie about Kyle, her new love interest. Owen reveals to Amelia why he is still upset about his sister’s disappearance. April receives a false positive for a birth defect for which she blames Arizona on not catching it, Arizona decides to hand the case to another OB so that they can remain friends. Amelia kicks off Stephanie from Kyle’s case when she finds out that they are a couple so Stephanie breaks up. Amelia and Owen confess about their fears to each other about moving further in the relationship. Callie and Arizona don’t want shared custody of Sofia so court decides who will get it which raises several issues, while April & Jackson negotiate shared custody of their unborn baby. Callie assures Arizona that she will be Sofia’s mother no matter what judge decides, but Sofia’s sole custody is given to Arizona after which Callie breaks up with Penny. Meredith confronts Amelia after learning that Owen and Amelia are thinking to marry. Stephanie gets back with Kyle, but Amelia is not able to save his life. Alex confronts Jo about not answering his proposal, while Owen accepts Amelia’s proposal.

Nathan has a talk with Meredith regarding Amelia. On Amelia and Owen’s wedding day, Amelia starts doubting about marriage when Meredith talks to Owen about Cristina so she runs away with Meredith and Maggie. April and Ben rush to Meredith’s house when they forget the ring ,where April’s contractions get closer together. Andrew takes Jo back after learning that she is already married but afraid of the guy for which is misunderstood by Alex. Amelia gets married to Owen, and Ben saves both April and her daughter’s lives. Arizona makes amends with Callie so that she can relocate with Penny and raise Sofia as well. Nathan is looking at Meredith, so Maggie tells her that she likes Nathan, making Meredith shocked.
