The much awaited Season 3 of Game of Thrones premieres with the episode “Valar Dohaeris”. It runs into ten episodes ending with “Mhysa. The third season is largely based on the first half of R.R Martin’s third book “The Storm of Swords” in his epic “A Song of Ice and Fire”. The last season had ended with the assassination of Renly Baratheon ho had a greater army in comparison with his opponent brother Stanley Baratheon both marching towards King’s Landing to throw away Joffrey Baratheon. Back in King’s Landing, Joffrey Baratheon had won a great war thanks to his alliance with the House Tyrell.
The North is in a state of dismay as King Robb Stark remains in the field and the Iron Born occupies the Winterfell. He needs to decide on the way to win an overall victory and also win back House Frey with whom he had a pact of marriage. His uncle Brynden Tully also called Black Fish had warned Rob that they had lost the war when the King had married Talisa Maegyrs. The relationship between the King and his mother starts straining as she releases Jaimie Lannister from their hostage and sends with him Lady Briann of Tarth to King’s Landing to bring back Sansa Stark. The two however again starts bonding when they hear the news of the murder of their brothers at the hands of Theon GreyJoy. Stannis Baratheon recovers from his wounds from the Battle of the Black Water, in his headquarters in the Dragon Stone Island.
The red Woman Melissandre assures Stannis that the iron throne belongs to him by right and that she is seeing certain revelations from the Lord of Light. Meanwhile, his trustful advisor Ser Davos had earlier attempted to kill the Red Woman, for which he is put into prison. Back in King’s Landing, Tyrion Lannister loses his influence as the King’s Hand as his father returns to the Iron Throne and takes back the position of the King’s Hand. Tyrion feels deeply ashamed of himself that his father does not believe in his capabilities. Jaimie Lannister on his way back to King’s Landing starts bonding with Lady Briann. In Winterfell, the Stark boys, Brandon Stark and Rickon Stark realise that they have to flee from Winterfell to escape to the Wall to meet their half-brother Jon Snow who is part of the Night’s Watch.
Their death was faked by Theon in order to create fear and terror among the people of the North. Theon Grey Joy faces the consequences of his actions at the hands of an unknown person. Sansa Stark is released from the marriage with the King Joffrey Baratheon and is offered help both by Peter Baelysh and House Tyrell. Arya Stark, on the other hand, is travelling with her companions Gendry and Hot Pie and finds herself in the strange acquaintance between the Brotherhood without Banners and “The Hound” or Sandor Clegane. The hound captures her and tries to give back her to her brother King Rob Stark. However, as he reaches the house of Walder Frey where the wedding between House Stark and House Frey takes place, all of the Stark family are cruelly killed naming the wedding as“the red wedding.”
Beyond the Wall, Jon Snow gets into Mance Rayder’s Wildling army imposing himself with the great task of finding out the true intentions of the Wilding army. He has a growing romance with Ygritte, who managed to hold him hostage while on his raid upwards from the Wall. As this happens beyond the wall, many of the Rangers start questioning the intentions of the Nights Watch’s moves putting Lord Commander Mormont's and Samwell Tarly's lives in danger. Daenerys Targaryen across the narrow sea continues her journey towards the King’s Landing by marching from the Astapor. She comes across Barriston Selmy, the former King’s Guard and vows to protect her to undo the harm he had done to her father. She is planning to buy on the Unsullied and thereby give a new life to the slaves ending the Slavery. She also gets to know of a young translator Missandei.
