Everybody is on their way to Long Island for the wedding ceremony of Robin and Barney. Robin and Barney on their way find out that they share a common cousin .They try to find out how is that cousin related to them. Marshall finds out that his mother has posted a picture of him announcing that he has taken a job as a judge in social media which Lily might see. So he tries every way to delete it but is unable to do so. He meets with a lady on the plane who gets irritated by his way. Both of them quarrel and are thrown out of the plane. At the end, somehow the photo gets deleted and Lily is not able to see. Lily at first travels with Ted by car first but gets annoyed with his habits of driving slow .So she takes the train instead just to realize that maybe Ted planned it all so that he could get Robin the locket she was searching for. In the train, Lily meets the mother. James arrives at the wedding venue. While Barney believes in James’s marriage for true love but James has gotten a divorce and announces it to everyone.

Robin asks him to not tell Barney as Barney would freak out. But later Barney comes to know about it anyway. He does not freak out, though. The receptionist does not give Ted brochure for the lighthouse as he is single. Lily comes to know that Marshall won’t be reaching on time. She becomes upset and orders to be kept with a drink every time. Lily finds out the list of things Ted is planning to do before he moves to Chicago after the wedding. She encourages him to have a talk with Barney. Meanwhile, Barney and Robin are trying to find a place hidden from their old relatives so that they can spend it together but somehow the elderly get there. James helps the elders get distracted from Barney and Robin. Lily finds out that her rehearsal dinner dress was torn by Marshall and Ted while having a swords game. She punishes Ted by letting him wear a funny dress on the wall and Marshall is made to dress in Wisconsin Jersey. Later Ted and Marshall find out that their 30 years old scotch was replaced with other ingredients when Lily and Robin by mistake broke the bottle. Ted goes to have a scotch with Barney and Barney tells him that he saw Robin and Ted hold hands in the park.

Barney asks what is going on which Ted says that it was just him being friends and nothing more. At first, it seems like Barney has forgiven Ted but later he makes him do stuff on purpose and replaces him with Billy Zabka for Best man. He then tells Ted he is upset with him for holding hands with Robin. They ask Marshall to decide who is right via Skype call. Marshall asks them to stage the things that happened with Robin now with Barney. Meanwhile, Robin comes to know that her bachelorette did not have any girls because she does not have many friends. Lily helps Robin to make new friends but ends up realizing that she cannot lose Robin to another friend. A fight breaks down between Robin and Barney’s mother when Robin wins James engagement ring and then Barney’s mother’s coat over a poker game. Barney is caught between the two. In the meantime, Lily gets angry that Ted is getting Barney and Robin three wedding gifts when he gave none to them. Marshall calls Ted and tells Ted that he did not give them any present even after they gave him so many signs.

Ted says that he gifted them Marshall’s favorite coffee machine and they were the ones who did not give him a thank you note for which even he showed signs. Later they find out that Stuart made Ted’s gift his so they did not know about it. Ted has to choose one of the girls as a date so that he can be with someone for the weekend. He makes the wrong choice and ends up with the wrong girl. Barney and Robin have to convince their Minister to perform their ceremony ad for that they need to have a very good background so they steal Lily and Marshal’s story of how they met. Later the minister comes to know about it and gets a heart attack. On the route to the long Island Marshall practices with Daphne (his driving companion) on how to break the news to Lily that he has taken the job. Daphne messages from Marshall’s mobile phone that he has taken the job to Lily.

Marshall calls Ted and asks him to delete his recent texts to Lily from Lily’s phone without beings asked why because he owes him “No question asked”. When Ted arrives at Lily’s room realizes he is not the only one whom Marshall seeks help for. Barney is there with his plan to delete the text. Even Robin is present there with a plan of her own. Both of them owe Marshall no question asked to. Robin and Barney then realize that they have to work together for things they do instead of disappearing without saying anything to each other. Ted asks Lily to delete the text without seeing it as he owes her a No question asked too. Later Marshall calls Lily up and tells her himself. Ted takes the girl he met at the party who he chose poorly to the Lighthouse after Lily encourages him to do so. There is a competition between Robin and Loretta (Barney’s mom) of making scrambled eggs.

Loretta says that she is the best while Robin argues that her mother’s scrambled eggs are the best ones. She waits for her mother to come and later finds out that her mother won’t be coming. Marshall and Daphne stop by at Ted’s mother’s house and then later find out that Clint (Ted’s stepdad) has accompanied them to solve disputes between Marshall and Daphne. Both of them instead get irritated by Clint and throw him away. Taking the girl to Lighthouse turns a bad experience for Ted. In coming years he visits it with the mother. Robin is upset that her mother won’t be attending her marriage. Barney accepts the challenge to make her happy. Lily reminds him of the challenge that he did not complete. There is a flashback where we are shown the gang discussing the relationship between Ted, Barney, and Robin being platonic. Lily and Robin give Barney challenges to hit on a girl which Barney completes so they start giving him chores. At the supermarket he meets with the mother and the mother tells him that he is in love with one girl and run after that girl. From there on he makes the plan to get Robin. Listening to this Robin’s mood brightens up. Barney’s father's family comes for the wedding and seeing his dad and mom talk normally he thinks that there is a chance for his dad and mom to get back together.

On another hand, James father is Robin and Barney’s minister James father also visits. James thinks that there is a chance for his dad and mom to get back together. Ted sees the picture of Wayne Gretzky is ruined which Barney brought for Robin. He goes on finding out who did it and later comes to know its Billy Zabka who did it as revenge for Ted taking his place as best man. Marshall drops off Daphne to her daughter’s debate competition. Marshall is on the bus with Marvin making him sleep with rhyming words. He makes up stories about Robin, Ted, and Barney in a rhyming way to make Marvin fall asleep. All the passengers help him form the rhyming words. The bus breaks down in the middle and Marshall decides to walk on foot to the venue. Barney thinks that Robin is going to throw him a surprise rehearsal dinner at the laser tag so he ends up going there and being caught by the cop.

Robin goes there to rescue him but finds out that it’s actually Barney who has thrown her surprise Canadian themed rehearsal dinner. The gang meets with a guy (Deren) at the bar who at first talks nicely with them and connects with them. But later talks behind them and makes Lily and Robin and Ted and Barney fight. He reveals to Barney that Ted will be leaving to Chicago after the wedding. Barney gets upset. Ted steals old scotch for him. Marshall gets life from the mother and she tells him that Deren removed her from her own group. Marshall asks her to fight back. Deren breaks the scotch that Ted stole and Ted punches him back. Marshall arrives at the venue finally.

Marshall makes up stories to scare Barney for his last slap. Lily and Marshall pause their fight and party with the rest of the gang. Barney gets so drunk that Robin and Ted decide to ask him questions for which he would not answer honestly if sober. Marshall tries hard to prolong the pause but they start discussing the situation and fight breaks out between them. Lily leaves the hotel room in the middle of the fight. An episode is dedicated to showing how the mother, Tracy McConnell , meets with Ted. Tracy waits for her boyfriend who on her birthday dies in an accident. After sometimes pass by her roommate asks her to join her for the ST. Patrick’s Day celebration where she leaves her umbrella and meets Mitch the naked man there. She attends the Economic class whose first lecture is taken by Ted. Her roommate dates Ted and she gets her umbrella back. She meets Darren who joins her band. Then she meets a nice guy who proposes her on Long Island but she refuses and goes to the hotel where the gang is staying. After getting so drunk Barney goes missing. Ted and Robin go on looking for him while Marshall and Lily clear things up on moving or not. They decide to stay and not go to Italy.

Robin and Ted discuss Ted’s good and bad relationship. When asked if he is still in touch with them he lies to Robin that he is not but he actually talks about most of them to track down her locket. Ted tells her that she is the one but he is not after her anymore and is letting her go. Barney is found but is hungover from getting so drunk. The gang tries to wake Barney up even a little so that he could tell them the ingredients to his famous hangover fixer elixir. After their several tries, Barney gets up for a moment where he tells that he lied to them when he gave them to cure their hangover. They all promise to never get this drunk. They lie to Barney that they performed Weekend at Bernie with him and did the wedding pictures. Barney gets confused on which suit to wear. He books a room for all the suits .Ted doubts that Barney is having affair but then later realizes it's for the suits and helps him decide which suit to wear. Lily is upset that Robin is not as excited as she should be on her wedding day. To let her get excited she decides to steal her thunder by wearing her wedding dress and getting photographed on Robin’s wedding day.

Nothing excites her until her mother appears in the hotel. Marshall and the guys think where Lily went when they had a fight. Billy Zabka tells them that he saw her going in a car that night .They come to know it’s the Captain(Lily’s boss).So they barge in his house to question him. Ted solves the mystery and says that Lily smoked. Later it comes to the light that Lily is actually pregnant. Marshall then decided to go to Italy instead. There is a new guest in the wedding Gary Blauman for whom Robin forgets to keep a table so she asks help from Marshall who seeks help from Ted. But Ted dislikes him so they go asking Lily and Lily likes him. That way they find people who like and dislike him for some or other reasons.

Barney who dislikes him too asks him to leave the wedding. After they realize that it was a mistake it’s too late and he is gone. But at the end, he does return. Half an hour before the wedding rituals, Barney and Robin both start panicking. Robin wants to run away and Barney has a problem with writing vows. Marshall and Lily offer help but he refuses to take their help saying that they have broken their vows. Robin waits for a sign. Ted asks Barney to give her the locket .Robin finds out that Barney’s lie and is about to run away when she runs to the mother. She asks her to close her eyes and think. When she opens her eyes Barney is there who confesses he lied about the locket being from him and he vows to never lie. Marshall and Lily rewrite their vows. The gang then meets very little due to circumstances. The gang decides to be together for big moments. Then they find out that Robin and Barney have divorced. The gang then gets to see less of Robin. Tracy gets pregnant and postpones their wedding. Barney gets a girl pregnant and has a baby girl. Tracy and Ted get married but later down the road she gets sick and dies. That is the time Ted stops telling the story to his children. His children tell him that the story was mainly on Robin and that they should get together. He goes to Robin with the blue French horn.
