So You Think You Can Dance is one of the most popular and viewed dance competitions on television. The show first came on the air in the year 2005. Since then, it has achieved to become more than just a show, it has become a phenomenon. The concept of the show was created and developed by Simon Fuller.
Mathew Diamond and Nigel Lythgoe turned out to be the directors for the show. The first season of the franchise was staged and hosted by Lauren Sanchez but from the second season, the gorgeous Cat Deeley held that position. The judges that have appeared on the show till now are Mia Michaels,
Paula Abdul, Maddie Ziegler, along with the permanent judges Nigel Lythgoe,
Adam Shankman, and Mary Murphy. Till date the show has been honored with seven awards for Outstanding Choreography from Primetime Emmy Awards, and a total of nine altogether.
The format of the show divided the entire duration of the show into two sections. The first section is the selection process and the second is the competition phase. The selection process is further divided into open auditions, call backs, finalist selection. The open auditions are held in numerous cities of the country, and the favorites of the judges are given a call back to see their performances a little bit up close. After the callbacks are finalized and people come up to the stage to perform, the best ones that the judges decide are given the ticket for Vegas. The finalist selections are held at Vegas.
This entire process goes on for an entire week where all the call back dancers are tested on numerous platforms and techniques. At the end of the week, the final top 20 are selected among the many and these twenty go to the competition phase. This phase runs for a period of eight weeks. All the contestants are paired and asked to perform on a particular previously decided style of dance, and upon their performance, they are voted by the public.
At the end of the eight-week competition phase, only two pairs are left behind and the Grand Finale happens between these two couples. The winning couple gets the whopping cash prize along with the opportunity to be paid dancers in Nigel Lythgoe's dance academy. The first season featured contemporary, hip hop, club, street, classical, jazz, Bollywood, tango, ballroom, waltz, musical theater, and a few other styles of dance. And the winner of this season was Nick Lazzarini and Sabra Johnson.
