This season of the office started and ended on a rocky note both on the series as well as in real life. Though this season was slated to have 30 half an hour episodes, only 19 came to fruition due to strikes on the part of the writers as well as the actors. In the end, though, this season had only 14 episodes some of which were uncharacteristically one hour long. This season quite shook the very premise of the show. The main attraction of this season was the relationship between Jim and Pam which had an element of will they or won’t they in the previous seasons. Dwight’s and Angela’s relationship had quite a downfall.

The comic timing and humour for this season are attributed to the failures and problems caused due to the upgradation of technology which left the characters baffled and frustrated. A closer look at the relationships on the serial brought forth harsh truths. A revelation is made that Michael was unhappy because she was in an abusive relationship with Jan. Thus, Michael re-entered the dating world, to explore his options as well as his preferences. Though Dwight meant well by euthanising Angela’s cat, she can't understand his actions and she leaves him which causes Dwight’s decent into depression.

Jim and Pam’s relationship is shown in bits and pieces, and this leaves the viewer wanting more. Whenever Jim and Pam do come together, its very sweet and endearing, and this is the only thing which keeps the audience interested and hooked on. In this season, Ryan is the new boss. Toby moves to Costa Rica after he accidently professes his feelings for Pam which causes him deep embarrassment. Toby is replaced by Holly who openly shows her interest and fondness towards Michael. Ryan’s position doesn’t last long as he tries to sabotage Jim and is arrested and fired.

Ryan acts out in this manner because he feels his boss David prefers Jim to him, and hence he misrepresents the online sales numbers. Pam also leaves soon after to pursue her artistic curiosity and to attend a three-month graphic design course at the Pratt Institute in New York City. The season ends with Angela unwillingly accepting Andy’s proposal and with Phyllis catching Angela and Dwight having sex in the office.
