The season introduces new plots and storylines for several characters and is closely adapted from the book series of the same name by the young adult author, L.J. Smith. The 22 part instalment (22 episodes each of 40-45 minutes) focuses on the curses of the sun and the moon, the introduction of the original vampires (which will eventually lead to The CW picking up a spin-off series of the Vampire Diaries, The Originals), and the arrival of the werewolves.

The season kicks off with Tyler’s uncle, Mason Lockwood coming to town to look for his family heirloom, The Moonstone – an object of extreme importance. His uncle soon tells him about the curse that is running in their family of werewolves. While this is happening, Katherine finds out that she has now transformed into a vampire as there is the blood of Damon Salvatore in her. Soon, she kills Carolina. The plot complicates with the coming of the original vampires, Klaus and Elijah. The originals are a combination of Vampires and werewolves.

Klaus is a hybrid as well, but his werewolf state was dormant, courtesy of the witches of his age. The rest of the season focuses on Klaus’ quest to power by forcing his werewolf side to come out of hibernation. He plans to do this by drinking the blood of the Doppelganger, Katherine Pierce, and by sacrificing a werewolf and a vampire at stake. His hunger for power sets a new theme for the season. Due to its popularity among the young adult audience, the season was able to bag several awards, including the Teen Choice Awards.
