Vampire Diaries is a story about two vampire brothers who go by the name of Damon and Stefan Salvatore. This season consists of 22 episodes with each episode being an hour long.

The season premiere titled “The Birthday” aired on September 15, 2011, with the season finale titled “The Departed” airing on May 10, 2012. The season begins with Damon secretly tracking down his brother's murders and later covering up his spree in Tennessee with Alaric. As it is Elena's birthday, Caroline plans a secret party at Damon's house. Klaus and Stefan are chasing the werewolf, Ray Sutton to gather information about the place where his pack usually gathers.

During the party, Stefan warns his brother Damon to stop following him and the night finally coming to an end with Caroline and Tyler sleeping together. Everyone is ready for a 1920's themed annual dance. Unfortunately, things start to turn ugly with Damon and Stefan realising that they probably need the help of Bonnie, Matt and Jeremy to undo a spell which could have been deadly for everyone present there. In the finale, Alaric has convinced the council to depose monsters-compromised mayors and sheriffs and to resume their hunt for vampires.

Stefan and Damon make a pact to respect whoever among them is chosen by Elena. Elena still hasn't decided, and she conveys the same to Matt. Original Elijah has finally returned, and to Damon's horror, he manages to convince Stefan and Elena to let his family deal with the threats of Klaus and Alaric. Tyler somehow manages to convince Caroline to leave him and run as he fears his bloodline is going to be doomed, courtesy of Klaus. Later, Alaric manages to reach his coffin which was in the storage, and the turn of events which follows are utterly different from what was expected, and no vampire notices the change.
