The 29th Filmfare Award was held in 1982. It was the year for art cinema which held its monopoly again in award list Shyam Benegal, Shashi Kapoor, Muzaffar Ali, Rekha and Smita Patil. Through Rekha did not win the best actress award, critics felt that she and Shashi Kapoor was moving towards meaningful cinema. Although commercial cinema too was part of the award ceremony bagging an equal number of other awards in a different category, yet art cinema movement was praised by one and all.
Rabindra Dharmaraj’s sensitive film ‘Chakra’ got the best actor and actress award for Naseeruddin Shah and Smita Patil. Rekha could not win the award for her excellent performance in ‘Umrao Jaan, but director Muzaffar Ali received the best director trophy. Shashi Kapoor’s film ‘Kalyug’ directed by Shyam Benegal received the best film award. The film ‘Kalyug’ had fetched for actress Supriya Pathak supporting actress award.
Actor Amjad Khan received the best supporting actor award for his spending performance in the film ‘Yaarana’. Veteran actor Utpal Dutt got the best comedian award for his performance in the film ‘ Naram Garam’. South Indian director K. Balachander got the best screenplay award for 'Ek Duje Ke Liye'. Even Anand Bakshi got the best lyricist award for this movie's song 'Tere Mere Beech Main'. N. R. Kittu got the best editing award for film ‘‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’.
Another successful movie of the year ‘Love Story’ gave best male singer award for Amit Kumar for song ‘Teri Yaad Aa Rahi Hai’. Music composer Khayyam won the best composer trophy for film ‘Umrao Jaan’. Singer Parveen Sultana received best female singer award for the song ‘Humein Tumse Pyaar Kitna’ for the movie ‘Kudrat’. Chetan Anand got the best story writer award for the movie ‘Kudrat’, Kader Khan got his first Filmfare award for best dialogue for blockbuster film ‘Meri Awaaz Suno’.
Jal Mistry got the best cinematographer award for film ‘Kudrat’. The Filmfare award for best art direction went to Bansi Chandragupta for film ‘Chakra’. Hitendra Ghosh got best sound recordist trophy for film ‘Kalyug’. Film ‘Aadarshila’ received Filmfare Critics Award for best movie. Sai Paranjpye's comedy film 'Chashme Buddoor' and Yash Chopra's love story 'Silsila' had found an entry as nomination but could not win any award.
