The 31st Filmfare Awards ceremony was held in 1984. It was a total domination of art cinema in the category of maximum awards. Shabana Azmi, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, Govind Nihalani, Mahesh Bhatt stole the show. Govind Nihalani’s film ‘Ardh Satya’ got the highest number of awards in the award ceremony.
Govind Nihalani received the best director award, and its producer Manmohan Shetty and Pradeep Uppoor got best film trophy. It was felt Om Puri would get the best actor award, but missed by few votes. Naseeruddin Shah got the best actor award for Shekhar Kapoor’s film ‘ Masoom’. Shabana Azmi received three nominations for films like ‘Masoom’, ’Mandi’ and ‘ Arth’, but won the trophy for her splendid performance in ‘Arth’.
Sadashiv Amrapurkar won the best supporting actor trophy for film’ Ardh Satya’ and Rohini Hattangadi won best-supporting actress award trophy for her stunning performance as a maid servant in 'Arth'. Music composer R.D. Burman got an award for his brilliant composition in film ‘Masoom’. Gulzar got the best lyricist award for the song ‘Tujhse Naraaz Nahin’ for 'Masoom' and singer Aarti Mukherjee received best female singer award for song ‘Do Naina Ek Kahani’ in film ‘Masoom’.
Mahesh Bhatt got the best dialogue writer award for film ‘Arth’, The year was a loss for actress Smita Patil as Shabana Azmi replaced her easily with maximum awards and accolades for every film that released. Singer Kishore Kumar got the best singer award for the title song from the movie ‘Agar Tum Na Hote’. N.B. Kulkarni won the Filmfare Award for best art direction for the film ‘ Razia Sultan’. Govind Nihalini’s film ‘Ardh Satya’ is one of the best top films ever made in India and it won for Vijay Tendulkar best screenplay award.
S.D. Panwalkar won the best story writer award for the same movie. Veteran actor Utpal Dutt won an award as the best comedian for the film ‘ Rang Birangi’. Shashi Kapoor’s film ‘Vijeta’ won Filmfare best cinematographer award for Govind Nihalani, the best editing award for Keshav Naidu and the best sound award for Hitendra Ghosh. M. S.
