Mahabharat is a prominent mythological epic drama series, which was aired on STAR Plus channel. The serial is based on the story of Mahabharata. It started airing on September 16, 2013 and ended on August 16, 2014. Mahabharat was directed by
Siddharth Anand Kumar, Loknath Pandey, Amarprith G,
Kamal Monga and Mukesh Kumar Singh and produced by
Siddharth Kumar Tewary, Rahul Kumar Tewary and Gayatri Gil Tewary under the banner of Swastik Pictures. Mahabharat is a story about Hastinapur’s throne, an empire that was ruled by Kuru clan. Kauravas and his brother, Pandavas compete for the ruler ship of the whole empire.
The Duryodhan and Yudhisthir believe that they are the first to inherit the throne. Shakuni (Praneet Bhat) got angry when his brother, Bhisma (Arav Chowdhary) asked the hand of Gandhari (
Riya Deepsi) for his nephew, Dhritarashtra (Anoop Singh Thakur). But he also agreed when Bhishma convinced him that Dhritrashtra will be Hastinapur’s future king. On the Coronation ceremony, Pandu (Arun Rana), the younger brother of Dhritrashtra became the king due to the high influence of their younger brother, Vidura (
Naveen Jingar). This made Shakuri feel that she was deceived so he vows to destroy the Kuru race. He spread the seeds of the crowning battle during the adolescence of Dhritarashtra’s son, Kauravas and Pandu’s son, Pandavas. Shakuri poisoned Duryodhan’s (
Arpit Ranka) mind. Kurukshetra War ensued where
Shri Krishna (
Saurabh Raj Jain) gave Bhagwad Gita to Arjuna (Shaheer Sheikh).
This battle results to the deaths of Bhishma Pitamah, Karna, and many more. Dhritarashtra’s sons also died in the war except for Yuyutsu, his son with Sugdha. Mahabharat is a big-budget serial where the production spent ₹100 Crore or a total of $16 Million and another ₹20 Crore or $3.2 Million to market the show. The ensemble cast also includes
and a lot more. The original series has 120 episodes only but due to the good ratings the serial received, they were given two more extensions. The premier received an approximately 8.4- Million viewers, which became the highest viewership received among any other weekday show in India on its first day. It also became India’s highest rated weekday show for three years. Mahabharat received many accolades including the Star Guild Award for Best Drama in 2013 and the Star Parivaar Awards in 2014. It was dubbed in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Oriya, Marathi and Bengali languages.
