The Government of Kerala through the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy has instituted the Kerala State Film Awards. The awards are given to various categories of Malayalam films. The awards have been given from the year 1969 onwards. The original number of awards from the date of its institution was 15, however, recently more than 30 awards are given every year.

The awards given every year include J.C Daniel Award for outstanding lifetime achievement, best film, second best film, best short film, best director, best actress, best actor, second best actress, second best actor, best child artist, best story, best film editor, best screenplay, best cinematography, best sound recorder, best lyrics, best music director, best art director, best background music, best singer, best processing lab, best makeup artist, best debut director, best costume designer, best dubbing artist, best choreography, best sound editor, best film with popular value and aesthetic sense, special jury award, best children’s film, best documentary, best book on cinema and best article on cinema.

The recipients of the awards are selected by an independent jury which is formed by the Kerala Chalachitra Academy and the Department of Cultural Affairs, under the Government of Kerala. It is the films that are submitted before the jury that are being considered for deciding the winners. Every year, the Minister of Cultural Affairs declares the awards and they are presented by the Chief Minister of Kerala in a grand function. In the year 2003, the best film award was given to “Bhavum”, the film that evolved around the lives of an urban couple who has found it difficult to adjust to the fact that the wife’s mysterious sister has now come to live with them.
