The story starts in 1398 in Varanasi, India. It was the time of the Mughal occupancy in undivided India. Niru was a Muslim weaver.  He and his wife, Nima sold weaved and sold clothes. They were poor. They could earn only a meager amount by selling clothes. On top of that, the Mughal soldiers used to trouble them by taking raziya from them. Their economic conditions were so bad that they did not have a child. One day, while returning from the market, Niru and Nima find a newborn infant by the Lahartara lake, all by himself. They looked around and found no one. To save the baby from the harsh conditions of the forest, they take them home. Niru wants to keep looking for the parents, meanwhile, Nima wants to adopt the baby as her own. Other people troubled them by asking if they knew whether the baby was Hindu or Muslim. If he were Hindu, then it would be wrong to raise him as a Muslim. Nima and Niru decide to raise the baby without any religion. He was introduced to both religions and when he grew up, he could decide what religion he wanted to adopt. 

As Kabeer grew up without any limitations of religion, he had very fresh and different views about life and religion. He was inspired by both religions heavily. He felt that the pundits and maulvis are not always right as they are humans too. They fill their pockets in the name of God. Kabeer believed that there is only one God. It is humans who differentiate them by giving Him different names. He questioned the meaningless, unethical, and wrong practices in the name of God. He was threatened by both Hindus and Muslims, due to his philosophy. At the same time, both groups of people loved him as well. Later, he started his own religion, which was influenced by the Bhakti movement. He became a great poet. His poems are sung by both Hindus and Muslims.
